Well pups are about to be two weeks old. I was checking her today and sure enough her front left breast is hard as a rock. The pups can't seem to find it as its not as big as the others. I started draining it by hand and noticed at first it came out thick,then more watery and normal, then pinkish colored like there was blood. Any advice on how to treat this from home. Will penicillin do the trick? She is on a steady diet of diamond hi energy and multi mama milk replacement. She is eating normally and still treeing squirrels but I'm worried about infection for her and the pups. Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Never had it happen but I've been told to watch for it when I've taken pups off a gyp. It was described to me the same way as being mastitis. I would get with a vet.

Sounds like mastitis. .. infection in the milk duct. I had a gyp develop mastitis and all the pups died. My vet told me to take the pups off her and bottle feed but they still died.. good luck with it

I agree, I had a gyp get it in one of her farthest back bags, got swollen, a bit off colored and hard, I got lucky and the pups all made it. The vet gave me some kind of antibiotic for it but it has been a couple years since this happened and I can't remember what it was. He also told me to take a rag and run hot hot hot water on it and then to use the rag to massage the infected teat 3 times a day......did this for about a week and a 1/2 and coupled with the meds she cleared up but that bag never completely sucked back up tight to her body like the rest, it dried out and wasn't a cause of concern but hung an inch or so lower than the rest. |

Same thing happened to my bulldog after a vet visit and a cycle of cephilaxin (spelling?) it went back to normal.

yep mastitis I have cured it with anti-biotics that I had available but the recommended treatment is with CLAVAMOX . seems more common here in the last few years . never had an issue or any body I knew had any issues when breeding dogs pre 90's . people will tell you it is from a dirty invironment , but I am very sanitary in my ways in the whelping box and puppy pens . I think it is a feed additive of some sort causing this here in the last couple of decades .

Thanks for the heads up. Always thought that happened once weaning pups. My local vet is out of town and I'm somewhat hesitant to take her to some of the yuppy vets around the city. Anything over the counter I might be able to get at the feed store....penicillin? I will continue draining.

pennecilan or amoxicilan are good plus a calcium and potassium supplement are what I have used to treat this with fair results . but if you can get you some clavamox it will heal faster .

Mastitis Go to Vet and get antibiotics for it. I wouldn't pull pups yet

Well this site has come through again. I gave her some penicillin along with some vitamin supplements. and have been milking her as much as possible. Munoz got in contact with me and offered to send some meds my way! just good people all the way around. The advise and help I get off here is priceless. Thank you all!

Fellas just a heads up. Best way to treat it is with 20 cc two times a day of calcium glusonate. Just squirt it in her mouth. If it gets real bad mix 5cc penicillin and 10 c. Calcium g and shoot it under skin in kneck for three days along with 20cc twice daily. My buddies and I have cured it a bunch of times with the calcium. Stay on it or it will come back. And you can transfer it to other feeding females so wash your hands. Best thing is to wear gloves when checking females.

Going goid so far. Penicillin helped a lot. She is spunky as can be and eating like a horse. all pups are fat and healthy. pennicillin 11/2cc once a day for two days and a few hot baths/drainings and 90% of swelling is down and it her breast has returned to a almost soft state. Fluid coming has returned to a milk like color. Got the meds in the mail yesterday. So i laid off the meds for 24hrs. will start her on cephilaxin. Should knock out any infection left. also gave her the rest of some prenatal vitamins My vet gave me for a past litter....
