Well I got a crazy idea. I need some stainless 55 gl drums. I found some out of state but the shipping is a killer. Does anybody know where I could pick up used ones within a day trip of Houston? I also need stainless tables. I don't care what condition because I will be cutting and welding them to make what I need. I will be making this on a skid so I will need either pipe or I beams. Maybe somebody has some used skid laying around they will sell cheap that fits on a trailer. I don't have big money to spend. I am still stuck working at a grocery store to take care of the family. I will be getting a cheap TIG to get things done. I don't mind doing some work to offset costs or whatever. I just need the whole thing to be able to be moved on a trailer when I am done. I have already designed my whole setup. Let me know if you have seen something laying around and if you know who to contact.

I guess i shoulda grabbed the stainless pipe. They were buildin somethin on ft hood n had 30" stainless pipe. I grabbed a 1 1/2" thick stainless flange ring that was just "laying" around. Warren, would it be cheaper to buy the metal in flat sheets, roll them for ur barrels n weld the seam up? U mite ck with a resteraunt that is remodeling or goin out of business n see if u can pick up the food prep tabels up for possibly cheap or even scrap yards, take a walk through them n see if they hav anything that could be manipulated into what u want

I will go and see some people I know in the scrap business. The people I asked already did not have anything. Just hoping maybe someone has a broken legged table in the barn or something. I will have to get fittings and stuff. The big thing is the stainless drums. I just don't know where to look for used ones. I heard they use them for dairy and soft dring industry. I asked some people at Coca Cola but they had not seen any. They kind of stand out so I hoped somebody on here had seen some walking through somewhere. I think some oil field equipemnt gets shipped in them too. I don't mind paying scrap price I just don't want anything so nice I have to pay much more than scrap because I am sure I will mess some up on my first few tries at welding it.

I really do not need drums I just need to have clean water in stainless tanks and figured they would be a cheaper solution. Not sure what the price of sheets are but I may make a call tomorrow to find out. TIG welds are water tight.

Anybody made a skid? I am guessing two skids of I beam or pipe and then some cross braces. That way when I am ready to go into business I can winch it onto a trailer and then pull it off in a warehouse. Then just hook it up to power and water and I am rolling.

It will be for a food product so I would like to use as much stainless as possible.

What bout using beer kegs instead of drums? What do the skids need to be made from, stainless or can they be steel? Makin skids is easy, like u stated, pipe or i-beam will work n yea, put cross bracings in it based on how much weight ur asking it to hold up.

going into the bathtub gin bizz lol  .   but seriously check your local kitchen supplyers  and remodlers they may have a bunch of used stuff after some jobs . I know when I was plumbing the school remodels they would just rip out the old stuff from the kitchens  and take it back to the shop  .

Kegs would be a good idea if they are big ejough for you.  You could even weld a couple together if need be.

If I read right, you said picking up a chrap tig?  Why not just get a wire feed?  I would think it would be cheaper, easier and faster and more mobile welding

I never welded stainless. But I was told TIG was the most water tight. I can get one for $200 that I am sure is not the best but if it last through the project I am good.

I have some kegs but needed larger conainers. It will not be holding much weight besides the metal and a few hundred gallons of water. I just need to build it in my backyard and then get a warehouse when I am ready to start. That way I do not have to pay rent while I am building the equipment. I can make the skid out of anything. I only need stainless for the places food products will touch. So the skid can be anything. I will also need a deck to walk on and I think I will use expanded metal, diamond plate or something. The stainless I need is the drums. for the control panels and a prep area.

I have friend in the scrap business but he is out at his ranch and turns his phone off. His wife said he should be back in a few days. But word travels out by other people coming and going. He hates being bugged about anything relating to work when he is off so I have to wait.

If you have mig welded before, go with what you know.  To me, it would be much easier.  And, a good weld is a good weld...the method don't really matter, but both ways have pros and cons

Lowest cost welding would be stick, mig gets in the pocket book bc of wire n gas, n tig is the cost of the machine n extra gas cost.

Don't tell the revenuers

I think I will just go with MIG. My welder got stolen a while back. To get a TIG that can do aluminum it cost way too much. I will just go with another MIG and I can just get a spool gun if I need to weld aluminum. Plus MIG is easier than stick because I hate stopping to change sticks in the middle of a weld and then knocking the slag off. MIG just weld and go. Now I just got to go find the best price on a MIG.

My friend told me not to buy any metal because he can get it for me at scrap price.
