Catchin hogs on the reg

Well recently I have really become interested in the capabilities of the Garmin Astro unit.  I have had the topo maps on my unit for about a month or two and have become bored with them.  So I got to digging, and I have found a couple of guys on a discussion board who are going to help me with my next project.

What I am attempting to do is convert a raster image (google map) into the Garmin Vector format.  It involves using a program that translates and rewrites the program so that on the Astro unit will be displayed actual google Map images.  Who knows how long it will take, but I think it will be a huge advantage.

Here is a screenshot from a regular topo map

Here is a screenshot of what it will look like after the conversion

Buddy if you can find an efficient and effective way to make that screen show up on my Garmin I will pay hard earned money for it.  That would be a H U G E advantage to be able to see an aerial view of where you are at.  Keep us posted........

Any thoughts on how large the file will be to encompass an area say the size of Texas?  Does it take considerably longer to update the screen vs the garmin topo software?

While you are at it....Do you know if there is any way to connect the Astro to an external screen? I would love to be able to view the info on a flip down LCD

Circle C,
That is the only problem.  Unfortunately I will only be able to load about a 3 or 4 square mile area, the rest would be in topo format.  And I am sure it will probably take a month to download. But I like to play with my toys.  I like where your head is at though on the external screen...I will look into that.

Matt,
I am expecting the screen resolution to be a tad lower on the unit then in the screen shot.   I will be sure to keep you posted, I am shooting at trying to have it done by next Friday, but I have been known to zone out on stuff like this and stay up till its done!

That would be the cats meow if it can be done on a large scale. All of TX is not necessary but a large area of the state that you hunt in would be BAD!

I think it would be neat to have a sym card with a hand full of counties on it.  You go to a different area, just pop in a new card.

something to think about...some of the google maps aren't up to date. i was looking at some property that i just acquired and they didn't have some new subdivisions and such. it still is a great advantage but it can also get you in a bind when you think you are turning out and next thing you know you are in the middle of a subdivision or there was a clearing now there isn't or a man made tank was made and you didn't know it...just something to think about.

I have a membership to google earth so my maps are updated I think every 4 months.....That is a good suggestion

Somehow I did, I'm not real sure exactly how though?....lol It kept saying that it failed to convert to mapsource, but when I opened up mapsource it was there...So I am going to chalk it up as magic and leave it at that Grin Thanks for the help the other day though.

Thats what I am shooting for.  I am gonna start with as much of Brazoria County as I can fit on a S/Dcard.  Some of these S/D cards have a lot of memory on them, but I think I remember reading somewhere that the Astro doesnt work well with any more memory than 2 GB.  Has anyone on here used a S/D card with more memory?Huh?

Matt,
what county would you use the most?  If I get things worked out I will drop a card in the mail to ya, you can help me field test it.
