Sure, I'm catching hogs... but I think I'm ready to shift towards a slightly "looser" dog...

(Mike, you have permission to say I told you so... sort of Grin)

I'm still wanting the bite, just not the catch.  I still believe a dog with "bite" has the ability to stop a hog sooner than a dog that won't put a tooth on one... Once the hog stops however... NO CATCHY TILL CATCH DOG GETS THERE!  So, that's the direction I'm headed now with my dogs... just in case you were wondering Grin

yeah, sounds like your heading in the right direction!

i too had a lot of gritty dogs that always tried to catch. i spent more time playing doctor and nurse then i did hunting.

So, question is......is a gritty dog worth it if you can't hunt him for 3 weeks while he's healing up??

No to mention the headache that comes with it....getting off work and coming home to injured dogs that you have to take care of. not fun...

I have trained my dogs to stop and bay a hog, but they won't try to catch until my pitt gets there. every now and then, they'll jump on a small one, but not too much.

just a few bites to the back legs and azzzzz is all you need to stop a running hog!

I have always said there is a very fine line between being too gritty and getting wrecked or causing the hog to break, and being gritty enough to stop the running hogs.

Most dogs are a little too far one way or the other. But, oh, when you get one right on the line, it is a thing of beauty to behold!!

Noah, I didn't own a catch dog the first few years I hunted... just rough ol' leopard dogs. Caught a lot big hogs with them too... until one day, they out grew that roughness. Grin

I was glad they did because I got tired of the cut up, beat up dogs. I was very fortunate that all mine lived through it, but they were in on hogs where a lot of others didn't.

It's a toss up either way on dogs with the "bite" from what i've seen. Sometimes that bite will stop the hog... but a lot of times it will kick them in high gear and they'll head for the next county.

I'll stick to my loose dogs and hopefully catch one every now and then. Wink

You have seen the light.....lol.  If you switch to a lever action catch dog then you can really cut down on injuries.  BUT, I'm starting to wonder which one is cheaper to feed.

Don't think I'll lose the catch dog just yet... but you never know Grin

What I do know is I'm over "front end" catchy curs.... this "fine line" of rough-to-catchy has a whole lot more to it than can be explained easily.... lose the catch... lose the bite that stops a running hog... chew that a$$, leave that head alone!  Grin
