anybody in the ft hood/temple/belton/salado and waco area know of good gunsmith in those area? I know there is webber guns in temple, but I wouldn't use them to assemble a set of lego blocks. im doing an ar-15 build and need the head spacing checked after I put the barrel on and tighten the barrel nut. I could buy the tools and pay for next shipping, but I don't wanna buy something for a 1 time use.

never mind. I went ahead and ordered the tools and for a next day delivery. figured by the time if might get a reply, it would be to late to nxt day the order and it wouldn't get here till mon/tue anyways. I made a free floating barrel nut tool and buttstock jam nut tool just to see if I could and they work flawlessly, well gotta find out if they will hold up to the tq of 70ftlbs, but fit flawlessly. this build is a barebones stripped build and it saved several hundred, even after ordering the tools, I will have less than a $1000 in the gun and tools. nxt project is to paint it. any recommendations on the type of paint? rattle can will NOT work, it comes off with ease using a bore solvent or regular clp oil. anybody have any first hands knowledge of using that dura-coat bake on paint? i was gonna do a USMC digi-cam pattern or the army's new multi-cam pattern, but not sure yet. i know the digi cam pattern will be a pain to duplicate. i talked to several folks and they agreed that the camo dip will work, but is very easily damaged just by rubbing the weapon against a tree limb.

Sure can. Ill disassemble it tomorrow n post pics. Its not as hard as i thought it would be. So far the hardest thing iv found is getting the paint to adhere to the finish.

Both upper and lower rcvrs started out stripped, i know i said i would strip them back apart, but after thinking bout it and some of the small springs and pins, i decided not to.
Here is the lower just before i started

Lower with telescopic stock

The upper after i installed the fwd asist and ejection cover

Upper with a detach A2 style rear sight assembly

Free floating fwd hand rail and homemade barrel nut wrench

My extractor removal tool and head space gauge just arrived, now waiting on the barrel, gas tube, front sight and BCG (bolt carrier group, with bolt). Once this last pkg shows up today, im hoping to have the weapon built up and possibly test fired. If not test fire today, i will be able to do it tomorrow morning and zero the irons, and then zero my eotech halo sight.

Next time you need gunsmith recommendations let me know,.. I work at Shilen and have a ton of people I could get you in contact with. Nice gun! But I'm sure you figured out setting the head spacing isn't as hard ad it seems.

yea, I did head spacing in the army, just didn't have the tools till now and its been 6-7yrs since iv messed with an ar, mostly dealt with the 240s and m2s my last couple yrs in the army. only thing I need now is to powder coat or dura-coat the whole weapon in the flat earth color just like the stock. hopefully the coating will allow me to start painting it and it sticking. what/where is shilen?

dodgegirl, I found 300rds of lake city 5.56 for $135, plus tax, but im trying to get the purchases tax exempt. I don't think I will be able to get tax exemption, but its worth a shot. even with out tax exemption, its still cheaper than $180.

Shilen Rifles INC makes custom match grade barrels for bolt action and Ar15s. We are located in Ennis tx. We ship out custom actions/barrels to a company in California and they coat everything for us. The finish is pretty durable.

Well function check went good. Fired 2 shots with it in a vise and a rope, then fired 3 more from the shoulder. Only thing left to install is the muzzle brake when ever rock river gets off their butts and processes my order. Here are the last few pics of the build.

Thanks. I wasnt exactly sure what part of the build to document, but as i completed a section, atleast for the upper, i would take a couple pics.

Now that i ended up buying or building the tools needed, (except for a standard star pattern barrel wrench) the nxt build will be a piece of cake. I enjoyed building this thing from scratch, it give me a good feeling of acomplishment and pride in this build. If any1 wants a build done, let me know. Im gonna order some bake on gun paint in the next couple weeks and start the color scheme a lil at a time.

If u want more indepth pics, let me know, im gonna have disassemble some of it in order to bake it in the oven.
