Just letting y'all know that skunk that committed suicide by dog was rabid. The state called me yesterday to give the bad news. I always thought that a dog carried immunity from its mother til a year old, guess I need to read more often. The vet told me yesterday they need it at 12 weeks old, though he also said he saw an 8 week old pup die from it last year. The law states I have to quarantine them for 90 days or euthanize them. So they are getting locked up for a while. We vaccinated them yesterday and they need a booster at 3 and 8 weeks. He said the incubation period on a dog is 1-3 weeks depending on how far away from the head they are bitten. So, I should know something within a few weeks. I feel awful about it. I keep all my critters up to date on their vaccinations, I can't believe I let this one slip by me. Live and learn and don't let it happen again I guess.

Very sorry to hear this. Fingers crossed for you they all go through the quarantine without incident. Crazy how many cases I've been hearing of fairly recent....

That sucks... I always thought a pup had to be at least 6 months old to get the rabies vaccine?

According to the state rep and the vet its 12 weeks. The vet said the man with the 8 week pup had to go through the 14 day round of shots because he let it lick on him til it died. Another thing people don't think about is vaccinating their horses. Last year a local rancher here killed a rabid skunk in his barn. He thought he was ok because his dogs were current on vaccs. Well couple months later his 8 horses died from it. I'm hoping everyone reads this and uses our mistakes and misfortunes to protect themselves. These are rare occurrences but once they hit you they can be devastating.

This is what ive heard my entire life regarding pups, vaccine at a minimum of 6months...... Who knows. |

We have always vaccinated at 14wks. Then once every year after that. It may or may not carry from the mother for 6 months to a year but if you don't have up to date records of the vaccine then it never happened in the state's eyes. Rather to be prepared then fight someone trying to take my dog. Hope you can get them back soon!!

My vet vac. All my dogs starting at 4 months. He comes out once a year and updates all the new pups and the ones that need a booster shot. Cost me about 250 a year its worth every penny for the peace of mind it gives me.parvo and rabies shots are the first thing and the least expensive thing that we do for our dogs,concidering all the dog food,vet bills such as getting them sewn back together,gas to go huntin

Thanks Mike. Now it's just wait and see. They were working cows so dang good. The Cow gyp was on the verge of being an all star. She would work them by herself with absolutely no quit. My plan was to start them on hogs in the spring. Kerreydw that is exactly how I do it. The vet comes out once a year to semen test my bulls and vaccinate all my critters.
