First thought that came to mind when I read this thread: Tournaments with dead hogs, and someone trying to add a little weight.

I don't know if that was your intention to bring this to light or it was for another reason, but that's what came to my mind when reading this thread.

I think it would depend on the hog.  If a small hog's (50 lbs) lungs filled up with water, it would be less weight than the water filled lungs of a large hog.  The percentage to the live weight may be the same, but overall pounds would depend on the hog.  I would think only the lungs would fill with water unless their was a puncture to the inside (say the chest cavity).

This is a really hard question.  I guess you could take a dead hog and add a lot of weight, but too much should be obvious.  If you hung a dead hog on a scale, I imaging you may put up to 25 lbs or more of water in a hog.  If you then tried to take the hog off the scale and drag the hog around or move it, I imagine some of the water would come out somewhere.

If the purpose was to add weight to a tournament, it would be like fisherman adding sinkers or weights inside fish.  Wont be the first or last time.

Dont hogs have to be gutted before showing up to the weigh? From the couple tourneys that only allowed dead hogs, the rules stated the hogs had to b gutted prior to showing up for weigh in. With that being said, how would a person fill the cavity up to add water weight? Soaking a hog during a tourney keeps the natural liquid weight in the muscles, instead of the muscles dehydrating.

Pretty sure this thread is sparked from the hooligan hunt yesterday. Winners rolled up with thier 5 hogs in a tub in the back of there truck. Pretty sure they would have kicked all our buts if they would have left a hog laying in the bed of that truck lol them were some flat out big pigs. But, them hogs were completely saturated with water. They literally had water running out of every hole in their body while laying on the scales. But agin, they had this won by a long shot. 5 hogs weighed in at like 1014lbs gutted weight, second place was 840lbs. But I can totally see where this added to their over all weight. water is 8lb to the gallon, they spilled atleast a gallon out of the throat/chest of them hogs after they drug off the scales. Just the same as others were spilling ice out of the chest cavity after leaving the scales. Ribs are curved, leave the head lower while carying it to the scales, then lay it on its side on the scales, pick up the back feet first when leaving the scales and nobody would notice. If it would have been a closer race to 1st place I reckon there would have been more contraversy, There was plenty of water still comming off the hog when they were loading back up. But them boys sure enough had some big hogs. Good job duck creek!

Looks like hogs will have to be hunt up for a minimum time now and inspected individually by judges...there is always going to be ways for the people who want it bad enough to edge their position a little.

Yep- some people will do anything for a buck and do whatever it takes to win a competition.

I dont want this to come off as being a smart ass and i hope u dont take it that way, but. Live weigh the nxt hog yaw catch, then kill it, gut it and soak it in water for 4-8hrs and re-weigh. Im kinda curious bout it too. Ill try n remember to do it the nxt hog i catch.

After competing in allot of hog compitions seeing most top teams come in with water filled tubs I learned to do the same as to it couldn't hurt!  The difference with us is that we took pride in keeping the meat eatable because that tub was filled with ice not water. Keep in mind barefoot hogs had water pouring out all ends as well and we still won by 193 pounds. We could have turned in 4 hogs versus everyone else's 5 and still won!   I'd say that was a beating since you asked, not cheating!

I dont think anyone implied that anyone else was cheating.  It was a very good question and a fair one.  Im glad it came up on here.  Gives me something to think about next time I go to a place and plan on catching a couple hogs.
