My buddy has a nine year old blue tick that years back has won hunts.. He has had em two years and when he got him he got a job off shore and ain't been back since.. So in other words he ain't been hunted.. He told me when he bought him he was supposed to be a good dog.. Anyways he called and told me I could have him.. I thought about going and getting him just to see.. Could I take him with a younger good dog and knock the rust off him or what? He is very good bred and the guy said he was a straight tree dog.. What y'all think?

Seems to me there's only one way to find out. Put him in the woods! Shouldn't need a young dog there if he's that old. Heck, he might even tree them, shake them out, skin em and bring them back to ya! Lol

I would catch a coon in a live trap to spark the flame again and that should be it, good bred prey driven coondog keeps the hunt in them till they just can't hunt anymore. Like was said, he shouldn't need any help in the woods being a seasoned vet already

Try him with a coon in a rolling cage. He should get tune up right away

then just remember he is a 9 year old dog that has done nothing for a couple years , don't expect too much at first . but  time on the ground getting him in shape to be able to run should come first . then show him a coon to light the old fire , then of to the woods .

He should do fine. Cut a coon loose and shoot it out and should be fine. If your not happy with him let me know. Lol

they say you can't teach and old dog new tricks, but I bet you wave a coon in front of him and he'll remember everything he may have forgot LOL.  I'd turn a coon lose and see what he'll do.  I bet he'll do fine.  May have to get him in shape.  Good luck with him and keep me posted.

He hasn't forgot just go huntin and he'll show you. I got a redbone the same way hadn't been hunted in 3 years. I kept her for 3 or 4 months before I ever tried her. I didn't figure she was nothin but a bullet dog or she wouldn't have been free. She treed a coon by herself the first night I took her and that was the best dog I have ever coonhunted. She was fixed, she never barked on the chain and it didn't matter if you hunted her every night or every 6 months ,she would tree a coon. And she did not run trash. I'm bettin that ol blue dog would go right out and tree one. If he ever would.

I got a 9 year old walker dog in the kennel that i can leave in the ken for months go out load him up and drop him and more than likly he will be treed over a mile in the thickest mess possible and have the coon. I started comp hunting and i can promise you some of them comp dogs aren't worth anything and some are. I seen one at a PKC hunt not too long ago that won the hunt cause he didnt tree. If he wouldn't went to the dogs treed he would have been scratched. Worse hunt I've ever been to luckily i wasn't hunting any of mine that night. Dont get on to him for slick treeing right out of the box for him being so rusty. It might take a few hunts before he trees with the meat.
