I've seen a lot and heard a lot....
Personally, I'd say 18 months they are ready for war. I'm watching 2 pits I'm using as a team. Lola is 8 months and 60 pounds-she goes down to the bay pen and doesn't act like she wants to kill the hogs-YET! She's from proven stock so I'm not worried at all if she will catch. We are just watching her be a pup and we enjoy her around the yard being in her puppy stage, not in a hurry to put her on the front line!
Bambi is a 65 pound gyp I took in 3 months ago, she's right around 15 months. Her 1st time to see the hogs was a given sign she was born to be my CD. 100% ready to get in there and catch. No doubt she's ready to be on the front lines!
I'd say based off their age alone 15-18 months ( I'd trust them to hold their own. )
As far as starting them, put em on a pound for pound situation and see how they work for a minute. A good age for that to me is 6-9 months. Just my 2¢

The one I'm starting now I let see a pig at 6 months. They were his size give or take a couple pounds. Put him in the pen he didn't really know what to think. He just kinda checked the pigs out . Had a bay dog outside barking. Put the bay dog inside and he nipped a pig. It squealed a lil and it was on. Pulled him off the ear. Let him go and he caught again. Picked him up and waited. He is a year old now. If u put him on the lead and get close to my pig he wants it. I plan to use him as back up for my RCD . Hopefully he will be capable of handling himself soon.

started mine @ six months just letting him watch the bay dogs in the pen . never let him touch a hog till he was a year old and it was on a hunt . a good catch dog needs no '' training '' it should just come natural .

No perfect way to do it but keep this in mind just becuz he is a bulldog don't mean he is invincible he is still a pup and go slow and he will be fine

She is 18 months old took her to the pen yesterday to se if she would do anything and she tried to tear down the fence to get in there previous owner said the she had never sen a pig before

Sounds like she has the want to and heart to be a CD...
...now keep a close eye on her when she gets excited-she may nip at anything within reach due to her nature-especially when there is a cur runnin around yip yappin!
...also watch for her 1st grip and hope she holds..I'm not to experienced on how to judge a pit (if they have re-grip issues) or Maybe they learn to grow out of that trait?
