My catch dog is broke from cows but one of my grumpy heifers got after him one time and he caught that joker !! I had a time getting him to turn loose. She was bucking and spinning like a rodeo bull and he was just along for the ride. NOT COOL. he knows better but I cant blame him. She tried to stomp all over him.

If your wanting to catch wild cattle  SilvertonBoarDogs has some good ones for just such cattle.   He has made his living catching wild cattle.    Heck of a knowledgeable dog man.   You should look him up on here if that's what your after.   If you can't get in touch with him, I can.     What he catches cattle with Catahoulas.

Hog catch dog and a dog you go and gather cattle with are two different mentalities that will probably not work with just general gathering of cattle.     Cow dog you want to have a desire to push the cattle together and keep them together.   If one is looking out, the dog need to see it and deter it from running off.   If the cow does step out, the dog or dogs need to put enough pressure on it to run back to the heard where it wasn't being hazed.    If this entails grabbing a hold of the head then by all means but the dogs needs to be fast enough to get to the head.   Also it don't always need to grab a hold of the head every time a cow steps out,  just work the crap out of it, if the cow continues to push forward and not turn back to the group then the dogs should grab the head and go to town untill the cow gives up and goes back at which time the dogs need to leave the cow alone.     They need to watch and circle the entire group and be able to read the cattle.      A hog catch dog usually will not operate like this or have this sort of intelligence bred into it.
On the other hand you can have a good cow dog of this sort and sometimes catch pigs with them because of their natural desire to put the pigs back into a group and if they don't bunch up but run off, the dog will grab the head.      People that look after ranches with fairly calm cattle probably not gonna have dogs as rough as a cowboy who catches wild cattle for a living.
Also you don't want a dog catching calves and mauling the hell out of them.   Hold their momma in the heard and a calf will want back in usually.
I'm not saying your dog won't make a cow dog because ya never know but I am implying the odds of a dog bred for the function of catching pigs  is probably not gonna suit an experienced cowboy and work the way his dogs do.            That's my personal thoughts.

Yeah what he said...lol...im wandering what kind of dog your talking about. When I think catch dog I'm thinking about a bulldog.  I dont know squat about working wild cattle though. Maybe one of these cowboys on here will help you out. When you say "catch dog" if your talking about a real rough cur dog that will catch a hog it might work. A big rank cow might be enough to back one of them up and make it bay. But a bulldog catch dog that i like will have enough heart he'll catch a grizzly Bear. AND HOLD.

The best way to know is put her to work and see what she does. Chances are she will be to rough to drive with but may be just right to handle waspy running off cattle. Just go try her and see what happens

I agree with this.

Don't worry about all the mentality and theory stuff from people that post about what they read or heard.  Example, one of my plott dogs catches most every hog he sees....he will bay the heck out of a cow though and will not get closer than 15 feet.  The first time he went into a cow pasture I was hauling butt to get there to keep him from catching.  He may change over time if he was consistently on cows but the point is, you wont know unless you try.  Chance are, she wont be too ruff right away.  She may be just rough enough....especially if she is only started.  Also depends on your definition of started.
