I know winter doesn't officially start in LA/TX until February  Grin but...  I am wondering what other measures you all take, to care for an outside winter litter. I have gotten a lot of pointers from a good friend. I have a wood floor lean-to kennel with the wall of a shed on the north side. I plan on covering the south and west side with a tarp and some of the east but not all to allow access. I have a big brood box that I will be building higher sides on and enclosing and putting on a roof to trap the heat from the heat lamp I will put in it. I have Nemex to worm the mom (2 weeks pre litter) and Nu-Milk powder to sprinkle on food 2 weeks leading up to labor, and a comfortis pill on the way for the mom. Any other comments and recommendations will help. A couple questions I have are what temperature am I safe at before turning on the heat lamp? Will the heat lamp hurt them on a warm day?

The pups will crawl in and out from under the heat lamp if they get too hot or cold... but I always turned it off on warm days.

You can pick up some plug ins with built in thermostats that will cut on at certain temperatures.

Have 5 week old pups now.. turned metal shed into kennels with pine shavings on floor for easy clean of poop and warmth in the igloo dog house that's inside. It's next to a regular kennel that way mom can escape in between feedings..no heat lamp. The igloo stays warm inside the shed

Had a litter last December. 11 pups in an XL igloo. Put a plastic curtain for dog house door. Straw in house. No heat lamp. No extra cover. House stayed nice and toasty even on the coldest days. All 11 pups made it.

I put metal on 3 sides and top of brood box. Brood box is huge so I put 2 lights in it. She had 11 and one got cold on the night of birth. 10 have made it almost 2 weeks now. Thanks for the help!
