Question I have a bay pen is it better to keep pups far or close to the hogs in the pen or does it matter for a woods dog

I dont have a bay pen but i do have a hog pen with a boar that i raised from a shoat in it. My best cur dog and my bulldog both sleep less than 20' from him every night, hasnt bothered either of them at all.

I've also wondered this. For example, if I put my dogs in the box and put a pig in the cage to take to a our old wooded cattle pen I would think my dogs would go crazy in the box the whole way there and tire themselves out before we even were able to work them. But along that same premise we used to keep our sheep/cow dogs penned close to the livestock and they never lost interest when it was time to work them so I'm not sure. Any thoughts on this?

I have a hog pen In the middle of my dog's chain dogs on one side and pen dogs fairly close on the other. I also have a pen I will put pups in that's a few feet from another hog pen when the pups are small I will put them in the pen that's close and put several shoats in the pen when I feed I will feed the pigs right by the pups pen and it don't take long before they're going crazy trying to get at them pigs. The other pen I keep bigger hog's in and my chain dogs around it I keep tin around the outside so they can't see the hog's but they smell and hear them all day and night sometimes I will take the tin down and let them bark at the hog's. I don't know if any of this actually does anything for the dogs but mine sure do like hog's and nothing else. I don't imagine that it hurts to have em smelling hog's 24/7.

I got hogs right by my dogs if I let my dogs out they run right pass those hogs and get in the truck. They under stand those are caught. Now you take them to the pen that's different. I really don't think it matters what you do on some levels some dog will work some won't some will show out in a pen and some will in the woods just get after it they will show u what they got

Lol Peel mine do the same thing I was referring to the younger dogs and letting them bark at the hog's,I made it sound like I got a yard of unruly fools lol. I do believe it helps the younger dogs being around the intended quarry day in day out though.
