My neighbor's pitbull chewed her own tail off and ate it. What causes a dog to do that?

A lot of times if a dog has an injury to the tail they will chew it off

I guess there are lots of reasons for a dog eating it's own tail....maybe he just got tired of that tail chasing him all the time!! LOL- Crazy dog?
On a serious note, the most logical reason (that I can think of) is there may have been an infection (or injury) and the dog's instincts made him eat the tail off. This is odd for sure.

I associated that more with bull terriers. It was crazy! One week I see the dog and she looks fine, the next week her tail was gone.

In 35 yrs with that breed I've seen 2 of them chew their tail off. It was hyper bored dogs both times!
