Arkansas game and fish

Arkansas has adopted the rule of no hog hunting at all on WMA's!! So I pulled up to a local country store the other day and there were 4 Agfc trucks there pulling hog traps side by sides and there's no wma around there so I step inside and see a game warden had one of the landowners that I hunt cornered up talking to him about thermal hunting his property. I listened to him telling him how they were trapping close to his property on private land?? Well I held it until he said unfortunately dog hunting is ineffective!! I lite into him asked him how come they are seeking private land to thermal hunt and Trap when the local WMA is over run and the roads are rooted up side down.He dropped his head and ended conversation with no answer just ate quick as possible and left the store!! I can't figure out what they are doing!!

Yeah it sucks. They banned dogs in the Sam Houston National Forest WMA here back in 2010 after a 10 year long dog season that lasted 2 months out of the year. They said dogs were ineffective and were opening up year round to gun and bow hunters. Well, after deer season no one hunts its completely infested with hogs now.

I don't know if yall heard about it or not,,, but Effective Jan 12th,, The Commissioner of Ag over here ,, Mike Strain reports that a new EPA approved poison called Kaput has been developed and approved.. I believe that the state is dead set on using this type product on wmas and nwrs and private land ... They have closed numerous La. wma's over here too,,, with no sign of reduction in hog population,, but they did blame the closure on Bear harassment by HOG Dogs... Lol,,, these people are prizes ,, No common sense whatsoever..

First started with dogs then they banned hog hunting. They are protected on WMA's.

I have a seat on the states feral hog task force representing Louisiana Hog Hunters Association, the bait your referring to has only been approved through the EPA not by any states that I'm aware of, all it is is Warfarin (rat poison, human blood thinners) its retail name is Kayput, in the task force's report to state legislature there's a section in there about stopping the use of this stuff because of the potential side effects with numerous other species and the contamination of the corpse on the areas it may be used, also I've pushed real hard and have been heard loud and clear about the effectiveness the dog hunters can make if we're given the opportunity, I have in my possession the report that is being given to state legislature and the number one method on it is dog hunting, were proposing the opening of 3 additional WMA's that have never previously had a season, the extension of season in 3 other WMA's, the possibility of re-opening the WMA's that have been shut down due to other management programs by shuffling the dates around, and lottery hunts on more state land, I'm the only dog Hunter in the room for these meetings and have at least made us be perceived in a positive light, the states head veterinarian even provided us with information about WMA's here in our state that there's no way they can argue against our effectiveness, these reports were put together by biologist and they were impressed at our effectiveness and have asked the question numerous times already why aren't more WMA's open to dogs, I can't speak for other states and associations but I know the LHHA is working our butts off to ensure we don't loose our heritage to special interest groups, I have a theory on why all of a sudden the recent crack downs on hog hunting, all I will say is I believe someone in a high up position, within a federally funded national department has their hand in the cookie jar and are slowly trying to corner the market on hog control so products from the companies that they have their hands in will be bought ( high tech traps and such). I know when our states Dept. of Ag & Forestries was price shopping these traps, they called the 3 leading brands and were told this, "our price is this, this is what we're selling them for, not a penny less, we have the markets cornered", Louisiana is looking at this as utilizing all aspects of population control and dog hunting is high up on the list...

Ed that is the biggest issue I've pushed, all the agencies want to holler we have a hog "problem" but yet are hands are tied and there's so much red tape to be a hog dog Hunter it's ridiculous, they don't like to hear that the states managed WMA are nothing more than brooding grounds for the hogs and once food supply runs out or population gets bigger than the land will sustain they have no choice to move to new areas, a lot of the farmers who call in their complaints have already traced the hogs back to WMA's in their areas...

That is a SERIOUS undertaking and would require a pile of money and people just to keep it up and running and with various laws in the different states you would have to have somebody full time just to keep up with them, it's been tried several times to have a national dog hunting association of some type but seems to have always fell through, the best bet is to start a state association and grow from there and partner with the Sportsman's Alliance, they are a national organization who have the staff and lobbyist on board already and are very pro-dog hunting....

Ok,, thanks for the info Goose,,,,, So from ur prespective the poison will not be utilized on state owned land such as Wmas since it has not been proven to only target hogs and it has direct effect on other animals that come in contact with it.... So many times,, Money and politics come into play and common sense is thrown out the window because some big wig has his hand in some legislators pocket... Thanks again for all that u do for us as hog doggers,, our voices cant be heard to the important people that needs to hear it..

You can never tell with politics, I'm not going to say I don't think it will be utilized but will say this, the state of Louisiana's head veterinarian was shell shocked about this new "bait", there are biologist from QDMA, and several other research outfits throughout the state in this task force along with reps from LDAF, La Landowners association, and La Farm Bureau, no one was in favor of this because of the potential side effects on non target species, it's in our report to legislature that the state do a lot more research and consideration on this before it's available to the public and if it does become available to have severe restrictions, now the sodium nitrate is another story and could potentially gain ground in the years to come....
