Got one of my younger dogs cut pretty bad a week ago today. The hog cut him from the corner of his mouth back about 4 inches. I stapled it shut on the same day. Went and checked on him today and he has ripped everyone of them out. How long is too long to wait to close a wound like this?

It's not to late but it should of had stitches not staples on the mouth

That's a bad spot for a cut, the dog will continuously scratch and paw at it. Stitch it and keep it clean.
I had one get cut on his chin, dummy caught on top jaw, and sow was steady bitin his chin. Like to have never healed because he kept messing with it.

Try to use a cone to prevent dog from getting to it after you stitch it but once it heels it may open back up at some point after dog catches

Well I was worried about it last night and went ahead and put some more staples in it. I was thinking about sewing it together but he just will let me put staples in. I really doubt he would have sat still enough to let me sew it. Any ideas on knocking a dog like this out so you can work with them easier?

Dexdomitor is what I use to work on mine when its real bad. And use Antisedan to wake them back up. .5ml is enough to knock out a 60 pound dog and if they start to wake up before your done just give them a .2ml dose. You just have to remember to give them the exact amount of Antisedan once your are done. |

I got a guy that cuts my bulldogs ears, and he will knock them out and sew em for me.
Maybe you can find someone like that, way cheaper then vet bill

We have a stainless still table with rails around it, sometimes we take them to the vet and sometime we tie their head and rear end down and do our selves. But whatever you do I would give him a round of antibiotics, it will heal up in half the time if you do.

in my experience it takes between 2-3 weeks to heal...most of the time I never stitch...I use cutheal twice a day and a 500 mg amoxicillin or some type of antibiotic once a day for about ten days depending on the injury...a capsule just because the injection type is quite painful so I try to stay away from that...

I have had several dogs get the mouth ripped open. They have to have stitches to heal right nothing else will work. I learned this the hard way.

It probably should have stitches. You may need to " rough the edges" up a bit if it has been over 24 hours.. a cone will prevent him messing with it. I keep our dog's cuts clean with vetericyn.. it isn't much but bleach, salt and distilled water.. i'd give him a shot of antibiotics.... as to what to knock him out with, i have no idea, never have done it or needed to at home
