Went hunting Saturday night, Turbo, Diesel and Bullet struck on a big boar and ran it almost two miles before they finally stopped him…we got close enough to hear the fighting but my hunting partner did not want to go across on another’s land…I finally talked him into going on account I have to respect his wishes…dogs fought hard for about an hour or so before we went across but by time we got there the hog broke so we toned the dogs in…
Dropped the dogs further back on the property we hunt and Turbo and diesel struck again and this time they had him shutdown in a canal…caught him within a quarter mile or so…the rest of the pack got there and it was a caught hog…the hog weighed about 300 maybe less but not by much…I saw where Diesel had two cuts on the shoulder but not bad compared to what he’s had before…not much bleeding so I thought he would be ok… I snapped him up and on the way back we saw a few hogs run across in front and we unsnapped a few dogs and caught a nice sow…Diesel fired up good but I didn’t cut him loose…
He didn’t look good on Sunday, he did drink a little fresh water but wouldn’t eat…not even hamburger nor lightly fried beef liver…I usually an open amoxicillin or cephalexin capsule and mix it with some food but he wouldn’t eat…so I called my brother last night to see if he had any injectable and he did so I drove over and picked up…I gave the dog an injection last night and he looked better this morning before going to work…went home for lunch to check on him but he didn’t make it…he will be greatly missed…hopefully next year he will have a few nieces and nephews doing what he liked doing best…
Diesels sire passed away a month ago who was a pretty good dog…Diesel was also my best dog…his brother Turbo is pretty good but not like Diesel…
I was making a deal this week on a female to breed with Diesel but now it will be to Turbo…Turbo is near a 10 in size, looks and athletic ability…the color is also what I like as well…Diesel had a loud thundering locate and baying was really good…he had a little more grit and a way better winding nose for rigging or when out hunting…a dog that cast’s good and winds good is usually the better hunting dog…
Hindsight is 20/20…I should of taken Diesel to the vet first thing this morning…an IV with proper fluids might of saved his life…

Sure sorry to hear that Reuben. If only dogs could talk. I am the same way, if it does not look serious or something I cant handle I probably wouldnt take him to the Vet either. Always going to be a good one.

Man sorry to hear that for several reasons Reuben. Hopefully ole Turbo will be the producer. Sounds like he had something wrong that you couldn’t see. Some of these ole dogs are too tough for their own good sometimes. It’s mighty admirable trait to me but it can sure set you and them both up for failure. Good luck with Turbo.

Thank you T-dog… Your right on the tough ones…sometimes Diesel would get in that zone where it didn’t matter the punishment…he was not letting a big boar run…as he got older and smarter I quit vesting him… He was cut at the front point of shoulder where there is an artery running down his front leg…but I didn’t see any blood running once he was out of the water so I thought it wasn’t cut…he didn’t act like he lost much blood so I wasn’t terribly alarmed…
Thank you L.H.
Turbo is a nice dog but he is a little more cautious and probably quicker than Diesel was…Turbo is a powerful dog…if the pig weighs 125 or less he can rip off an ear and take off half the skin from the pigs head, along with the ear…I always say Turbo was born with a double shot of testosterone… I think because of this he needed a little more discipline in the beginning…a decent dog but Diesel outshined him…

Really sorry to hear about your loss Reuben. I hope that the Turbo dog can produce what you were looking to get from Diesel. Maybe a careful culling through of that litter and you will have a pup that takes after the Diesel dog that you can use for your next breeding. It sounds like both Diesel and Turbo have been earning their feed.

Sorry for your loss man,,, Like said before ,, IF dogs could talk it would answer alot of questions we dont know the answer too.. I had a male dog that had that same cut that you described one time,,, No doubt if it wouldnt have been a vet intervening,, I would have lost him too.. There are just somethings we cant control though.. Hope your future pups crank out some like old Diesel for you ..
