Here ya go TDog……friends don’t leave friends hangin!
-
I’ve been slowly but surely bringing along two bay dog pups and a catch dog pup. Percy & Yancy are 10 months old now. Half brothers out of my Rousty dog who is a Red BMC with mostly Thoms blood. Percy has some leopard dog on his mommas side. Yancy has some running walker on his mommas side. Lynda is a 14 month old registered AB with Hines Texas Ranger blood.
-
I bred for short to medium range, stock style bay dogs. Both pups are short range, 300 to 500 yards in no sign. Been hunting the pups together & solo. Both have found their own hogs. Both have been beat a fair share too. Both struggled with tracks in the drought. They have seen it all at this point. Rank boars, large sounders, rallies, small Sounders with shoats, etc. we have educated hogs, had deer races, learned to leave skunks & dillers alone, etc.

Percy is more confident and more of a hard going dog. He wants to bay tight and is more than likely going to be a rough dog. If he can learn to ease up on his initial approach, he will be exactly what I like. He doesn’t bust Sounders or catch out on shoats BUT he wants to get too tight on solo hogs. He’s paid the price already and seems to be more cautious on the last couple boars. He’s a top shelf bay dog that has a nice, loud chop mouth. He makes a catch dogs job easier. Time will tell BUT he’s definitely rougher than expected.

Yancy is more cautious and a loose baying dog. He circles & gives hogs plenty of space. He’s showing to be a little better track dog with a little more bottom than Percy right now. He stays clean & gets better every hunt. He doesn’t have a very good mouth yet & he barks on a jumped hog. I really enjoy watching him develop. He wasn’t blessed with the tools his brother has but he’s on a steady upward trajectory because he stays in the game & always tries.

Lynda has seen it all at this point. She’s been turned into bays with a really solid finished dog so far. She handles good & carries her vest well. She’s got good short area quickness & a really hard, breadstick tyke mouth. She’s not as big as I expected ( 52lbs) and needs to get 100% ear focused. She catches behind the ear & on the jaw sometimes. She’s what I call a straight line scratcher to a bay so I’ve learned to give her a clear path or she’ll go straight through the brush. She’s beating the old dog to bays now. She’s gotten hooked, she’s missed, she’s had hogs leave before she got there. She’s caught in water, etc. Her mind gets blown a little on Sounders so I’ve had to slow down and make sure we have a solid bay with a clear target for her. Again, time will tell. She’s got a great temperament and is a joy to be around. Handles the heat “ok” but will bear watching as she ages. Just gotta get her solid on the ear. Can’t be gettin my bay dogs wrecked.

Shotgun, you know what I know. It’s hard to be patient when all you have are pups. Your pups sound like they have a lot of try, all three. Try and want to will get them there. Whether or not that make the caliber of dog you expect will be for you to decide but I do know if they don’t, it won’t be because you didn’t do right by them. The difference in the cur dogs is for sure breeding. Sounds like both are being what they are bred to be. As young as they are, the steady progression is ok with me. So many times those dogs that come out on fire tend to plateau early and never get any better. The steady progression ones usually end up the better dogs, IMO. Hopefully your bulldog settles down a little with age and doesn’t just take the straight line in. After deer season, maybe it will be cool enough to you can hunt them longer and harder where she  gets a little tired and will be forced to slow down some and maybe learn from that. Sounds like she wants to be an ear dog just a little impatient with that too. You’ll get all three where they need to be, I have no doubt. It might be good that your curs are different in style. If they were both tight, they might get each other in a wreck or two. All three are sure enough nice looking. Thanks for sharing.

Appreciate the encouraging words TDog. I agree with you on the cooler weather affording me the time to slow down & hunt them longer. Overall, I’m pleased with their “try”, resilience, & durability at such young ages. Honestly, they have struggled the most mentally. Their attention span & ability to lean in and grind when it gets “mentally” difficult is where they have the most room for growth. I have walked them down tracks on looses and they are learning to keep at it.

Although rough dogs aren’t my cup of tea, I’m gonna make an exception for Percy. I’ll hunt him solo or use him as a catch dog if he turns out THAT rough. So far, I can hunt him with Yancy because Yancy won’t put a tooth on a hog. Just can’t hunt him with his daddy. They get “catchy” together.

I hunted Yancy with his Daddy & sister this weekend. He went every step on 3/4 mile track and located ahead of his Daddy. Sister covered & had a good bay for a few minutes. It broke & all 3 took it about a mile & a half before I had to call them off. Yancy didn’t want to quit. He made me wait on him in the dam rain! I was smiling & cussing at the same time!

Lol it’s an encouraging problem for sure. Maturity will fix a lot of that.
