Went and hunted some new country this morning that borders some stuff Tim already has access to outside of Weimar. It’s wet down here, I ain’t complaining, I’m just acknowledging the fact.
Tim brought his ancient male dog Curtis, a 3or4 year old male he calls roach. Two 2023 pup brothers (out of sketch) he calls Bob and pilgrim. And a pair of 1.5 Y/o gyp sisters (out of Curtis and a yellow gyp Tim has) that are flat going to be nice dogs. Along with his bulldog cardi.   I brought (Bob and pilgrims brother)Spoon and lizzo my greyhound.

Raining on us from the jump. Make first free cast. Held the 2 older dogs back. They finally got one jumped after about half an hour. Took em to an entirely new  block of woods across a hay field. Maybe a mile race total, they got him to turning circles and we sent the old heads to shut it down when we got close enough. They did that. 150ish lb boar. Decent teeth. Curs had him caught. We sent bulldogs to him and the landowners foreman who had us out stuck him. Was a good deal all around for dogs and all involved.

They rolled, struck another pretty quick. We had put roach and Curtis back up. We go to send them to help sort it out when it broke.(they are the only roughISH dogs we use) curtis went about 60 yards into the brush and stood a hog up. When we heard him stand up we knew it was a good one. Him and roach had him at a barely walking bay. We decide I’m going to shoot him so I grab my rifle and everyone files in behind me. They don’t make it very far before we get in them enough I see him for the first time. I see he’s big. He bluffs them dogs across my face and goes back to the right, they hammer his hind end and set him up. He’s about 15 yards from me. I now know I have to get this hog killed before them pups show up, because for some reason our not rough dogs like to try the baddest hogs we come across the past year or 2.

Long story a little shorter, pups beat me there, about 5 seconds of rodeo ensued and then they hung him. I dropped my rifle and got a leg, Tim made my rifle safe then grabbed the other leg, and rhett got to stick him. Probably the best hog all 3 of us have been there for in 5ish years of hunting together. We’ve killed a few good ones but someone was always missing. This one was a man.

He got Bob in the neck pretty good but just a flesh cut. He got doctored on for the first time in his life today on the tailgate and he took it like a champ.  Tried another one but rain kept on and we rained it out. Went and got big hog, hauled him to the scale at Tims receiving pens, and then went and got dry. Big hog went 270. Good day.

That’s a really good pair of hogs. That is Cardi pictured I assume, nice looking dog. Dogs are like gang bangers, the more there are the tougher they are.

Slim, I did an exercise for a couple of buddies at different times. They both were getting dogs cut up regular. I told them Ben it was the number of dogs they had on the ground. They brought the dogs they hunted to the bay pen. First dog in bayed without pressuring the hog. As we added them one at a time, you could see them tightening up tighter and by the fourth dog they were pretty tight and over pressuring making it move. By the time they were all in there the hog was full time running and they were crawling on it like ants. They didn’t catch it because they were bay dogs that wouldn’t completely commit to the catch so when they got hooked or slapped they would fall back, just like a gang banger. It was an eye opener for them to be able to see it first hand.

I don’t know if this has anything to do with your pups getting cut but just a thought. My buddies both changed their ways for a bit, but eventually went back to their original ways. They said they just couldn’t leave dogs at home and had to hunt them. My mind set was either hunt more so you can rotate them or down size because you have more than you can hunt. You might not really have anything you want to part with but if they get dead or crippled you’re still out. It’s usually not the one you would’ve parted with that draws the short straw either. My favorite would be the one that got hammered worst 10 out of 10 times.

That is Cardi yes sir. She has been a fine catch dog for us and Tim is real fond of her. He’s been pretty fortunate with good looking black bulldogs over the last 8 years.

Yeah too many dogs can certainly be a problem or cause them. I’ve owned the thug mentality type dog. Typically those are the “hog dog” style bred cur dogs IMO. which is the exact kind of dog we stay away from, these dogs ain’t that.

The 2 gyps never showed up to that big hog as they had their own going, we only had 5 dogs there. 3 of them being yearling brothers out of sketch. They are bred to be rougher, but hopefully not catch 300 lbers rough.

We don’t get dogs cut too often, maybe put a stitch or staple in 4 or 5 dogs in last 2-2.5 years(knock on wood). But for as rough as these dogs aren’t. When they do get caught, even on a 270 lb stud, they are in it for the long run and we are going straight for legs. Hesitation on mans part, or the dogs, I definitely agree is what leads to a majority of wrecks when catching big hogs.  This one got a small piece of Bob, but not even enough to put him out of the hunt.

I have a video from down south of exactly what too many thug minded dogs being sent to the baddest hog I’ve come across, that was already bayed prefect by 3 of my curs, gets you. And then when it goes south you can watch and hear them boys sull up and them cur dogs weren’t near rank enough to be messing with a hog even close to what this dude was. I’ll see if I can find it.

Killed my Boo dog from Jamie. Wrecked 3 or 4 of them other boys dogs. Was 3 grown men with me, you can’t see any of them behind me backing me up, and you can hear how scared 2 of them are when they talk. Embarrassing
