Boar bustin’

Kohl and his son Maverick came over and made a round with Deputy Dawg, Cannon and myself. We each brought a pair of bay dogs. Kohl had Chicka and Ken. They are half brother and sister to each other and my Outlaw dog and Ken is a littermate to my Ava gyp. All four are out of my Raylynn gyp, 3 different litters and studs. I had Ava and Outlaw. Deputy Dawg had Ray, who is out of Ava and Uno. Uno is the sire to Outlaw. He also had Rooster who is out of UNO’s momma and Chicka’s littermate brother. So all dogs were very closely related, which adds to the enjoyment for me.

We cast the first set of woods and nobody was home. The dogs wanted to leave and head west but we wouldn’t let them and loaded up to move. Drove on down the bottom and cast again and they got bayed on the creek about 450 from us. It broke  and they had it caught in the water about half way back to us. It was a about 160# boar. We showed Kohls new bulldog his first hog here and he was pretty up for the challenge. He took right to it. They relayed and got bayed again. This time we caught about a 180# boar in a real nasty set of dew berry vines. They were so thick and tall that they have choked the black locust trees growing up through them out. It was a sticky mess to say the least. The dogs relayed again and this time we gave Scooby, his new bulldog, a solo shot at it first. As luck would have it, it was a toad that we had bayed in those 10’ blood weeds. He slapped ole Scooby around a little and broke right past us. About a 120 yards later they were caught and we sent Ranger, Deputy Dawgs catch dog to assist in anchoring this big guy (250ish#).  He was the only one of the three that had much for teeth and they were just those 1 1/2” dog cutters. He knew what to do with them though. Poor Chicka got it pretty good a couple of times but the vet said she should be ok. Outlaw and Scooby both got a couple of pokes and I think Ray did too.

I said the dogs caught this last one. I meant Cannon roped him as he came by, slung himself up on its back, and rode him to the ground! It was a good little hunt aside from getting banged up. It got sure enough hot by the 9 O’clock mark. We were done by then.

Thank ya. It’s not too bad if you can start early and get dogs picked up in a couple of hours. It was kinda weird. These boars were all bedded solo and only a couple hundred yards away from each other but all along the creek. I guess they stayed in cover until it got too hot and then could go lay in the water during the heat. That creek has very brushy banks and lots of over hang.

Yeah,, you cant beat that man,,, That little feller got it figured out.. lol.... Glad the dogs gonna heal up for yall... them good ones like that last one will make your feed bill light if they aint careful....

Highwater, that spot is a bad spot for buddy Kohl. He lost his Timber (littermate to my dog Outlaw) dog about 200 yards from where we caught this big hog, actually right between where we caught the first and second ones. Then on this hunt his Chicka gyp takes a bad shot and gets cut right behind the eye and breaks the orbital bones. Hopefully she won’t lose her vision in that eye.

  Those are some good hogs and I see you have some future help coming along. If your gyp turns blind in one eye dont worry about it, I have had two dogs that were blind in one eye and it never slowed them down.

I think she’s gonna be ok. We’ve had two dogs in the last year get thorns in their eyes, big thorns, like mesquite or black locust thorns. Both of them have cloudy eyes now but I think they see to some degree. I often wonder if being able to partially see out of one eye and normal out of the other is better or worse than being blind in one and not the other. I guess it would depend on the degree of vision they had.
