Wisconsin Hunt. 8/24

Been off the internet for 2 1/2 weeks. Larry Smith and I went up to hunt with my buddy Andy Becker. To say we had a great hunt is an understatement. We made 23 trees and looked at 26 bear. One tree had a Sow with 3 cubs in it. All that in 17 days of hunting. Only day we didn’t run a bear was the day I left. We checked baits early and nothing was hit so I headed out instead of tracking the roads or trying to rig one. Hunted one day with Jonah Place and treed one and hunted one day with Danial Merts and treed one. Andys dogs are all out of my breeding and then we had my culls. Andy had taken for of my dogs up there the month before and had been hunting them.   Weather was anywhere from mid 40’s to high 50’s in the morning to a high of 80   I knew I had been up there to long when 80 degrees was feeling hot. My 14 month Sassy female trailed out, jumped and ran a bear 5.77 miles and treed it by herself. Andy’s daughter and I got a selfie with a bear that was treed 10’ off the rd. We were on the road when we took the picture. We had great dog work and I will say those Veternarians up there are sure proud of their work. I sure hated to come home but I was afraid Cheryl would fly the coup if I stayed any longer.

My son told me about your trip ,,,   I got several buddies up there in Wisconsin,, they aint never in a bad mood ..  I told em its cause they dont have sweat glands  LOL........   Fine trip and good dog work to succeed in that level..  Hope that male dog heals up again for you ,, hes got a little too much determination  LOL..

That poor male dog inherited the same gene I did, determination. My poor sisters weren’t as lucky, they got the hard headed gene.

  Thanks Y'all. I will say those Veterinarians up there are sure proud of their work. That Chief dog got it on his 3rd day and Andy knew it when it happened and said they still walked him a mile before treeing him and Chief was at the tree treeing. He had a dislocated hip, three broken ribs and multiple bites. He got almost a month off and picked right up where he left off. Those guys were pretty impressed with him. I told them I knew where another littermate to him was and I would check to see if they wanted to sell him but no dice there. I have to figure out this pic. thing with tapatalk so I can post more pics. I am trying to clear out my tapatalk gallery to see if that helps.

Cajun can you start dogs on bear more successfully at a younger age than hogs?

  T Dog,  I do not believe it is the species that determines if a dog starts early, that is genetic. If I could I would like to start all mine on bear first and the reason is, dogs have way more respect for a bear then they do for a hog. Also I think you can ruin more young dogs starting them to young on bear. There is just something about a bayed bear in a thicket that will scare the bejesus out of a dog. The problem is when you start them on hogs (My dogs) they get real catchy and when you have 1/2 dozen dogs on the ground and they bay a bear up they think they are going to catch that bear. Most are in for a rude awakening. Normally I do not like to start pups on bear under a year old but today with cameras you can tell if you have a small bear on the bait and that sucker can run. I did take a 9 month old female that did real good on the running and treeing but only put her down on the small ones. This year the had a good amount of larger bear on the baits which is good for kill season but not for training season. You do not want to get your dogs busted up before kill season opens.

You answered me, the part where you said about starting younger on bear versus hog. I heard from another guy that had Plotts and Catahoulas, that he liked to start both breeds on bear because he thought it made the catahoula dogs better hog dogs. He evidently didn’t use his plotts on hogs. It made me wonder if you could put younger dogs on bear. In my really simple little mind I would’ve figured the bear to be a little more intimidating and probably rougher  too if contact is made. I’m sure too it’s easier to know (most times) what you’re running with bear vs hogs.
