Anyone that knows me knows that I am a carpenter. I run a cabinet shop and trim houses. I have been running bout 15 guys over the last few yrs I have went thru bout 40 guys. Seems like no one can do what they say these days and everyone is a premadona. I remember  when the old guys schooled me I shut my mouth did what I was told took my work home and was trying to do what I seen them do. My goal was to be better then them and out work them. Most days I fail short but I was there soaking wet with my learning. Few yrs went by and at 30 I was better then most by 40 I had built a name for myself as high quality carpenter. Is it just me cuz I swear everyone just plane sucks these days. What are y’all’s thoughts on peoples skill and work ethics.

Maaaaannnnn, don’t get me started! People do NOT have self respect or a work ethic anymore. It’s reflected in everything thing they do. I heard a saying the other day that pretty much sums it up, “everything worth having in life is on the other side of hard”. I thought, there ya go! That’s why society is the way it is. It’s reflected in EVERY aspect of our lives from careers, to children, to family, to religion, to hobbies, etc. etc., we just don’t care about ourselves or our name. Why should we, it’s somebody else’s fault?

I worked my whole adult life as a union millwright in a paper mill where it was hard to get fired. The only thing that made you work hard was your personal pride. I left that job at 55 and went out and competed with young guys out of the hall. So many times they were paying off guys with a family and I told bosses that they could pay me off instead. I was told by more than one of them that said " if they worked like you I would keep them, but I need the job done". If you have a family and a 60 year old guy is outworking you, shame on you

I sat through a 2 day "Strategical Leadership Agenda" class last week, to try to figure out why we are having issues with the facility I work with. It was broken down into Leadership Team (Upper management), Drive Team (supervisors), and Team Members (grunts on the ground, the group I was in)......This class was a "psychologically safe environment" and people were "free" to speak their mind without repercussions. There were definitely some interesting conversations, but the one thing that stood out to me was the lack of loyalty from the top to the bottom.  As the upper management continues to take from the benefits from the employees, the employees become disgruntle, then it seems this mentally of "you're not loyal to me, so I'm not loyal to you" develops into an unbreakable cycle.

I grew up listening to my great-grand parents and grandparents talk about (not in these exact words) the loyalty of the company they worked for, and I could feel their loyalty back towards their company. So, my dad started working for the railroad with the same loyalty but ended up retiring early because he was so upset with the way the RR kept "taking away" from the employees.  I will be 50 in a couple of weeks, I grew up during a time when you knew if Dan Marino was mentioned he played for the Maimi Dolphins, Larry Bird played for the Boston Celtics......there wasn't a lot of switching around with players like there is today.

So, it seems that the love for $$$$$ has caused the companies to take benefits from the employees, which causes the employees to seek employment other places for $1 or $2 per hour more, which causes the company to lose employees with years of knowledge of how the company worked efficiently, now the company has to train a new employee and pay them the rate that the old employee left for and the new employee is only trained on the "basics" and has no idea of the tricks to operate the equipment smoothly and efficiently......SO, has the companies really saved any more money or does it just look good on paper??? But overall, companies end up being a body of people without any loyalty. (side note...Loyalty and pride seem to go hand and hand.)

On one hand, I can't blame a person for bouncing for one job to another for more money, because the companies' leadership is not creating a loyal environment.

Well, I guess this is fresh on my mind and I could go on and on......Sorry if my thoughts are scattered.

But another thing, I do think this WOKENESS, DEI, Critical Race Theory, Politically Correctness, and other crap like that are killing the minds and souls of the younger generations..... creating fearfulness, laziness, a lack of accountiblity and pride that not only affects the workplace, but all other situations in life and society like T-Dog mentioned.

There was a story on CBS the other day about a CEO of a credit card processing company. He raised every employee’s pay to a minimum of $70,000 a year. That doubled some of their salaries. He himself took a $1 million dollar a year pay cut. The critics said this was business suicide, it would never work. Not only did his production go up, but attendance and the quality of work improved. His turnover rate decreased drastically as well. The attitudes and work camaraderie also drastically improved. His communication between himself and employees was made easier as well. His company is now thriving. It’s common sense as that you are gonna get more from people if they feel appreciated and respected. If they like and respect you as a supervisor, you will get the most from them. If they don’t like and respect you as a supervisor, your gonna get the minimum. It’s no different with players and coaches. My dad always taught us that you were extremely lucky if you had 5 TRUE friends in your lifetime. He also taught us that you’re only as good as the people you surround yourself with. I have both of those to be exactly true. When I worked for Alcoa, we were Union. In the beginning unions had good intentions for the working man. But what I saw was that very few good workers ever needed union representation over disciplinary issues. They were usually fighting the company to save some POS worker that kept drama stirred up, didn’t do their job, and worked harder at trying to make trouble for the company than they did their job. That always aggravated the heck out of me. Take care of the good, the ones that take care of you, and tell the ones that don’t to kick rocks. I saw another deal about Nick Saban the other day. This ex player was talking about how Nick was just ripping his butt good. He was cussing him and calling him different names, etc. After practice he went to Coach Saban and said coach, why do you talk to me that way? I do everything you ask of me as soon as you ask it and I do it to the best of my ability. I’m not asking for special treatment but I’m asking for fair treatment. Saban replied that it’s not about you. More times than not, I’m coaching other players through you. I know you are going to give me everything and I know you can take that harshness and bounce back from it. Your teammates respect and look up to you and if they see that I’ll rip your head off then they surely know I won’t hesitate to rip theirs off as well. I difference is that I know you can take where most of them can’t, so I’m actually coaching them through you. That player had a whole new outlook on it after that. Being a leader isn’t easy, that’s why there are way more sheep.

Ya way out older guys work better period. When we was young we worked hard then the old guys to prove ourselfs that’s what made you a hand. Good pay came latter. I pay most of my guys 55 to 80 grand a yr and the second bizz slowed down they got attitudes so I just let all of them go at once. My family is left and believe it or not 4 of us are doing the same amount as 12 guys it’s ridiculous. Everyone has the entitled mind set it’s because there momma and daddy started being there friend instead of there parent. If you truly love some one you would sharpen there blade by handing them the stone.

My dad was UAW worker for 40 yrs at the same company he use to tell me in the 60ds unions where strong and also held workers to the standard. He said in the early 80ds it had shifted to protecting bad guys and restricting the good workers. It really boils down to two thing self ambition and or some one putting a foot in your azz

I will say this…it’s about having the right mindset…take pride in your work…treat the company you work for as it were your own…taking ownership is job security…

Very true Ruben it starts with humility no one has it any more. I truly believe if you never where slapped in the mouth as a kid for being disrespectful or back talking it’s hard to grasp the concept of doing more then what your asked to win the approval of you leader. Now some people don’t need that but most do. Every one wants the top with out climbing that why America that my dad grew up in was better then the ones my grand kids are growing up in there is no suffering to build grit and character bout themselfs

Some of my coworkers would say I was more of an engineer and not an operator…for me it wasn’t just about running the plant but to troubleshoot and make recommendations as to what was needed, making the plant to run reliably and efficiently and to maximize plant rates…I would say we are striving to be the best Vinyl plant in the world…so how do you gauge that, they would ask…I can’t measure that but if we do the best we can every day we will be top contenders…if you keep that mentality you will get job offers even when you have a good job…
My department won’t look for college degrees…we pick from the contracting companies that work for us…some didn’t graduate and others only got their GED…but we know what we’re getting…the cream of the crop…

When it comes to dogs I am very observant…I do the same with the contractors that work for us, I do the same with my coworkers, I’ve been doing it for many years…some get promoted at a young age because they earned it…these guys tend to gravitate towards high responsibility jobs or the critical jobs…sometimes you see these youngsters helping the lead guys making theirselves visible and taking on big assignments…it’s very interesting watching these guys operate…
The majority only think about their paycheck and not even caring if they provide the services they hired on to do…these characters just don’t get it…when layoffs come they’re the first to go as it should be…

T dog that’s the problem but most guys want 25 to 35 and suck. I skill tested 20 plus people back in the summer to fill one spot couldn’t do it they all sucked

Skill tested 8 fella this week everyone said they had yrs of experience and wanted top dollar but couldn’t pass beginner level skills. I seen something on tv the other day that is the god honest truth all the legends are gone or dieing off and no one wants to be the next

You sure right about that the last few generation of it’s ok not to win and it’s ok that your not the best. What happen to finding out what your good at or what you want to be good at and knocking the dang door in
