WV TRIP 2024

[The Old Man]

       Made the trip to WV again, had a good hunt and a good visit. We treed one bear one day, two bear another day, and three bear another day. Caught off of several as they were crossing 39 hwy.    I didn't get many pictures but did get some that counted. They had really wanted to get a picture of Mr. Walker and his great grandson under a bear tree and we were able to do that. Got a cold rig strike way out (dogs went 275 to the cold track) I dropped 3 dogs and an 8 mth old pup, they went to working and started in the direction of 39 hwy so we took off back down the mountain to go around and get ahead of them. Dalton (Mr. Walkers grandson had a long range antenna and radioed us that they must have jumped because they went from 500 yds to just over a mile  in a very short time. We figured they'd beat us across the hwy (or get ran over) since it takes about 25 minutes  to get around there. When we got a signal on them again they were treed  141 yds before the hwy, making it a real good spot to get the great grandson into the tree.   I have 4 of those pups and they had been hunting twice when I went to WV, but from their first trip to the woods I dumped them with the older dogs and they all would get hooked in and roll on the track, but its way too early to tell how good they're gonna be at it. I have 4 more younger ones as well so in the next year around here the cheese is gonna get pretty binding.
 I have been kinda low on dogs last year and this year with just 4 mature dogs and last year  had 2 pups that didn't make the cut. I didn't want 8 that were within 4 mths of the same age but bred an outside female that I had sold years ago and wanted a pair of those, then the same guy bred another female he had gotten here to a real good dog from a prominent breeder and since I had retained a breeding on her he brought me 2 of those, thats the 4 younger ones that came along after I had raised the others and kept 4 of them. Lo and behold I have bred 2 more nice outside gyps and will get 1 from each of those could have more of them but just can't stand them haha. With that many pups they better mind their P's and Q's as patience will be real thin.

What’s the old saying, “too much is better than not enough”? Options are always great to have. I have three female pups right now. There is about a month roughly between the oldest two and then again between the middle one and the youngest. The oldest and the youngest are what I really wanted but the middle one has so much potential in the way she’s bred that I couldn’t turn her down. They are all out of my family of mutts but the oldest one’s momma is only half of stuff. The Sexsquatch made an outcross that really worked well and I bred one of those gyps back to one of our males. She’s young but man I see a lot of things I like. Hopefully you’ll have a hard time picking because they all worked.

Sounds like a good trip Clue. Can’t wait to see how the pups turn out. Glad you guys got the generational picture. That is something special.

There was one generation missing, Joe Mr. Walkers son, he passed away unexpectedly 2 yrs ago this past spring and due to Mr. Walkers age (84) Dalton was anxious to get this picture. Joe was well thought of and well liked everywhere and is greatly missed.

  Hey Clue, glad you had a good trip. How is Mr. Norman e rest of the gang doing? We all miss Joe, he was sure fun to hunt with. Joe and Tracy spent the night at our house driving home from Tx. Tracy called me about 5 hours later telling me Joe had passed away. We all hated to hear that. How was Vernon doing? Glad you got some young dogs coming on.

Norman and Vernon are doing well, Vernon fed us one night and of course had one of his famous Lemon cakes for dessert. Joe and Tracy had spent a couple of days here on their way to Tx. he seemed fine I was shocked when she called here.
 Dalton had quit hunting for quite a while but has since gathered up a few dogs, but he is buckled down too tight with wife, kids and is a general contractor building a monstrous house, so he's not going to hunt enough to really make a dog. The rest of the local crew around there are same ol' same o' .
