Y’all sit down and let me tell yall a story. I had a buddy who gave me some ball bearings. Ball bearings are really good knife steel being 52100. It is extremely hard to move so I took a couple over to Mike the Knife’s shop and forged a couple out. My son has been wanting a knife related to his work. He is a plumber and gets all the old copper pipe that he takes out of houses. His buddy gets a lot of aluminum from jobs. They smelted the copper and aluminum down into ingots and then mixed the copper and aluminum down into some brass bars. Another buddy gave me some femurs off of a bear to see if they would make knife handles. It is illegal to sale any kind of bear parts but I can gift it to my son. Anyway I made him a knife and gave it to him for his birthday. He was some kind of tickled.  Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Now that’s really cool Cajun. I can only imagine how excited he was about that. It’s absolutely beautiful too so I’m sure he shows it off every chance he gets. WOW took several of my rasps over the years and made knives from them. I know lots of people have done that, but like your son’s knife, it had a lot of sentimental value for me. It was tied to my work as well as being made by someone that’s important to me. Another friend made me a little fixed blade to carry on my hip for daily use. It was also made from a rasp and he took the handles from an old hoof knife and used for the handle. Man I have used that sucker a bunch and it’s got a neat little story when I’m asked about it.

I made a few out of some bearings before I knew much about the 52100. I got to polishing stage and every one of them had micro fractures. And had a lot of time and work in.

WOW One thing Mike told me was make sure you work it hot. I would get a couple of press's out of it and back in the forge. That press will suck the heat out in a heartbeat. After I had pressed it into a rectangle, I used his power hammer to draw it out. I was amazed at how much steel you could draw it out to from a 1 1/4" ball bearing. Cajun, you exactly right. I was squashing it with a 60# power hammer and worked it too long between heats. It bit me in the arse. I had a bearing roller that was 4" long and 3" diameter and I ruined the whole thing.
