Christmas Eve 2024

I would call todays hunt as good as it gets for not catching a hog. We started off finding a good track and put Hank and Showgirl out. They trailed out and jumped in about 400 yards. When I say they headed south, they went south for about 5 miles and then were paralleling the highway. They went east for a ways and then went west and then came back east before heading back north. These roads in this club are so bad we just could not catch up. Every crossing they had the big hog and a deer hunter saw it and the dogs cross the road a couple hundred yards from him. Finally got ahead of them and the hog crossed 20 yards from us. Hank and Showgirl were only 100 yards behind him. We packed a couple of fresh dogs on him but we were in the last section before they hit private property. We get to the last road right as the hog crossed and had to catch the dogs. Hank and Showgirl put on 22 miles in 2.5 hours averaging 8.8 mph. Not to bad considering they have not been out very much.
We went looking for some more sign and found another good track. It was 10:30 and we put Showtime on it. He trailed out slowly and Larry put one out with him. It was tough going in places and other places they moved it pretty good. They crossed 5 sections and had the hog at each crossing. Finally at around 2:00 we called the dogs in. One of the best jobs of coldtrailing I have witnessed but being Christmas Eve we had things to do. There is no telling how far a Boar hog will ramble during the night and no telling how old that track was but I am pretty sure it was from the evening before. A lot of people might consider today as a waste of time and it sure depends on what you like but both sets of dogs really put the effort in and at the end of the day, that is about all you can ask of a dog.

Well you aren’t just a hunter, your a dog man! If you walked away proud, and it sure sounds like you should’ve, then I’d bet they did all they could’ve. That IS all you can ask of a dog.
