We didn't have a great hunt, but it was a good hunt. We had some split races that went long, dogs put on something over 20 miles, we rode 12.5 miles and caught 3 small hogs "big shoats". Adam's old dog had a heart attack or something, the last hog they caught they were all together and were across the big creek from us about 125 yds, so we waited for them to kill it and called them all back to us all but the old dog. He was sometimes stopped or just barely moving, he finally made it to the creek and just sat down, I had noticed he was wobbly and they had never been hot. Finally I told Adam lets ride across and I'll hold your mule while you climb up the bank and get the dog. He couldn't keep up with a man walking much less the mules and we were over 3.5 miles from the nearest road. I said you're gonna have to carry him out of here, I'll tie your mules nose right against a tree and hand you the dog. It worked and she never made a bobble all the way to the truck. When we got there he just laid on his side, couldn't even raise up, I'll be surprised if he makes it. The only thing I could come up with other than his heart was maybe a low blood sugar thing so I told Adam to squirt a little honey or sugar down him.

When the dogs originally struck they ran 5 or 6 hundred to the creek, my young gyp broke right handed and crossed the creek and headed on up the creek bottom the other dogs turned left handed and ran to the base of a hill where my 2 pulled up bayed " had a big shoat" Adam's 2 dogs blew right on through there and turned away from the hill across the creek bottom. They got out of tracking range, my 2 immediately went back to running when we go them off the shoat, but ran back towards where they'd came from which put them between us and the truck, so we decided to go on up the bottom to find his. When we got signal back on them they were across the creek and my young gyp was with them. We had ridden up the hill and were between the 2 groups of dogs, the 3 across the creek were .9 and going away, the 2 that were back down the creek were .8 but turned back towards up and came by us still headed on up the bottom. The other 3 finally turned back towards us and crossed back to our side. The 2 turned up the hill and bayed "caught out before we got there", the other 3 were now in hearing distance and they all got together, ran back across the creek and ran for a long time until wer got up there and they caught out, didn't see the hog but by the noise it was another shoat. Thats when we went to trying to get Adam's old dog. There are a good number of hogs in there and I believe we had a considerable amount of hog swapping going on.

All those darn shoats will create that hog swapping. Sounds like they were doing their best to stop that. I hate the old dog had problems. If I had put on 20 miles you can bet I would’ve had a heart attack, low blood sugar, low blood oxygen, and anything else that could be low. Sounds like an educational hunt.

Pretty good outing there except for the old dog. Hope he recovers. The one good thing about getting on Shoats is, it is good to teach the young dogs how to relay.

Called Adam yesterday and the old dog is alive and eating good, seeming to improve. Still can't identify the issue.

I suspicion he might have gotten the crap slapped out of him, since he seems to be sore internally, no cuts, holes, or hematomas. After they caught that last hog and the adrenalin subsided the pain set in on him. I'll probably never know, when he goes to getting around and feeling good we'll give him another trip and see if he is better or worse.
