I just freeze branded some of my dogs with the dry-ice and alcohol method.  Hold time was 30 seconds.  But about 10 seconds into it, the dogs really started to buck around.  I upped the tranquilizer for the rest of them.  I was stupid enough to do one without the drug, and that dog hates me!

Years ago, I had my dogs done by a man that used liquid nitrogen and the holding time was 8 seconds.  It made good white haired brands on all the dogs, but not on one older female plott, and her skin must have been thinner, because the hair did not grow back and she then had a burn scar for a brand.

I have read on some forums the liquid nitrogen hold time is 15 to 25 seconds (!!!???).  Does not make sense to me, because liquid nitrogen is 2-3 times as cold as the dry-ice and alcohol mixture.

Anyone know for sure what the hold time in seconds is for dogs when using liquid nitrogen?

Appreciate an answer if you know!  Thanks!

goatcher what tranquilizer did you use?

(1) I used a very close cut surgical blade on an electric shaver, then used a dab of shaving creme and a shaving razor to lightly go over the site.

(2) Dexdomitor was the sedative.  I have it on hand for major traumatic injuries.  I used to use acepromazine, but my vet suggested this was a better choice - it is both a sedative and a pain killer.

I want to try the liquid nitrogen, but I get conflicting advice in regards to the iron holding time against the skin on the internet.  Some people post junk just so they can read their own posts!  If the hold time is indeed 7-8 seconds, then by the time the dogs react to the cold brand, its over.  But the only thing I could find on the internet on dogs was a 17 second hold. Undecided  Horses take 8-12 seconds, colts take 7-12 seconds on the L&H website. Dogs?

We brand all our own freeze brand that is all you need is clippers dry ice and at least 80% or higher rubbing alcohol. All our brands are registared R on hip and ear. I dont have a dog that is a keeper that goes with out a brand. We have 40 + and my father in law has 40+ we found branding your own is cheaper than paying for each one to be done. lol

While on the topic of freeze brands, here is a link to register your brand for your dog w/ the La. Department of Ag. Thier enforcment is a lot better than regular court and have some incredible fines and jail times for theft of dogs.

I am getting my brand registered with them as we speak!

Ok so I've been lookin at branding me new pup. Can anyone help with how to get a brand registered for dogs in Texas? I've been researching and have been to the county office and nobody has been able to lead me in the right direction. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

My son's AG and my GWS is registered with the LDAF.  In fact, it is illegal here to brand a dog and not have it registered with the LDAF Brand Commission.

I loaned my plott Ziggy to Joey Young.  She is black and has my GWS on her ribs.  Last month he lost her and some of his curs without tracking collars when they busted out of the dog box during a hog race.  He got her back, but they tried to keep one of his curs, even pryed his nametag off the collar and lied to his face that it was their dog! he took his dog back.  I told Joey they did not keep Ziggy because they thought she was a anorexic black lab with a big ugly brand on her side!

You will see the jagdterrier needs hair clipped occasionally around brand to make it read better.  Smooth coated dogs like the black plott below do not need the maintenance clipping, just the medium coated dogs.
