DOG TRAIL ???

GOT YELLA DOG ON TRAIL SUPOSED TO BE 3-4 YR OLD FINISHED MED. RANGE DOG. GOT HIM 2 WEEKS AGO AND TOOK HIM OUT HUNTIN TWICE BOTH DRY RUNS NO  FRESH SIGN. THE DOG NEVER LEFT MY SIGHT . HE DID ACT LIKE HE WANTED TO GO WITH MY OTHERS AND HUNT BUT KEPT COMING BACK TO ME LIKE HE DIDNT KNOW IF HE SHOULD HUNT OR STAY WITH ME. I THINK IT IS THAT HE AND I ARE NEW TO EACH OTHER.

MY QUESTION IS HOW LONG SHOULD I WAIT FOR HIM TO TRUST ME AND HUNT FOR ME. SHOULD I BE CONCERNED YET ?

Tough question....can you get the original owner to hunt with you? or Did you hunt with him?

I bought a coon dog years ago...it took him 2 or 3 weeks. It took one of my Jagds several months before I could consistently catch him and then a year before he really would trust me...but he always hunted.

I've had dods that took a couple weeks to get used to me and the rest of the pack before they started hunting good. I would give him a little time!

Well that is a situation that is going to be up to you.  If you really like the dog and want to give it alittle more time.  Contact the saler and ask for alonger trial. I would deff. get him on some hogs first if at all possible.  To show him why YOU are taking him out into the woods.  IT will make him more comfortable in the new situation. If he dont do what you want him to do after a couple of times being on hogs.  Send him back

I got one dog that won't leave my sight unless he winds one. I don't know if it's because I have always hunted him off the the truck? If I'm walk hunting he will stay with me until he winds one. I have never seen him with his nose on the ground it's always in the air. He's found me a lot of hogs so I don't complain.

Give him time or take him back and hunt with original owner to see if the dog is what is claimed to be.

If it is, i've seen a bunch of good dogs switch owners and take several hunts to get back to hunting normal... getting used to the new owner and new pack.

When my dad and brother got Hank he was about 4 years old and it took him a couple of months to hunt for us. But we had already seen him hunting plenty of times with his previous owner so we knew what we were getting. I swear he would look at my dad and brother crazy eyed when they would tell him to get ahead :p he literally just stood there and stared at us lol. It'll take time for the dog to get used to you and new dogs. Hunt him with previous owner to make sure you got what you paid for.

The best dog I have ever owned, which is a medium 2-800 yard dog that will hit atrack from there and always finds hogs if any are around, walked by my catchdog for 8 weeks hunting once or twice a wk. It was very frustrating but well worth the wait!!  TWO MONTHS

Like everyone mentioned before it will take time to get used to each other but if you got another dog that tracks hunt them together while he gets comfortable and it should speed up the process a little but beware them teamin up and pushing each other further out at which point you will have to seperate them and go with the better choice. You could also team up with a friend with a tracker and then seperate them when your dog is going. Good luck!

How old or experienced were the other dogs on the ground you had this one hunting with?

Was the dog sold to you as a dog that gets out and hunts? Not all dogs are trained to hunt out of sight.

I WAS TOLD HE WOULD HUNT OUT SEVERAL HUNDRED YARDS. MY DOGS ARE CLOSE RANGE AND ONLY HUNT OUT TWO HUNDRED YARDS OR SO, NOT MUCH EXPERIENCE. THAT IS WHY I GOT THE FINISHED DOG TO HELP TRAIN MY POTLICKERS. I THINK HE NEEDS MORE TIME AND TO GET ON SOME PORK.

JUST WANTED TO SEE YALLS EXPERIENCE AND THOUGHTS ON THE SUBJECT.... I AM VERY IMPATIENT.......

i have a good dog that wont hunt good with other dogs unless she has her buddy with her. i took just her out with new dogs once and she looked lost. id go hunt with that guy and his dogs. but make sure his dogs are tied up and not finding the hogs for him.

I SAY TRY TO HUNT WITH THE OWNER TO SEE IF THAT IS THE PROBLEM AND IF HE IS WHAT HE IS SAID TO BE, SOME PEOPLE SEEM TO CLASSIFY DOGS DIFFERENTLY... BUT IM WITH YA IM VERY IMPATIENT MYSELF... ALTHOUGH I AGREE A DOG SHOULD TAKE MAYBE A FEW WEEKS TO GET USED TO A NEW OWNER AND PACK, ALOT OF TIMES IN MY OPINION ITS GOOD TO PUT THEM WITH ANOTHER DOG IN A KENNEL IF THEY ARENT DOG AGGRESSIVE SO THEY CAN BUDDY UP, BUT THATS USUALLY FOR A YOUNGER DOG... I have seen quite a few old dogs that won't get out and hunt as much if there isn't any sign. Young dogs check alot of trails that old dogs will go right past. Being that yall didn't actually catch hogs that might be the case also.

  If you like the dog,outside of hunting, take the chance. I have still yet to see Sally roll out like she did that day we hunted with Gentry. She and that young dog took off and bayed. I took the chance on her, it wasnt alot of money but....... I know what to expect out of her. She will roll with some dogs and not others. For now she is a steady short range dog that will find me hogs if they are around. She will also honor any bark. I am 100% happy with her. I think alot depends on price as well. If you had to drop down 1500 for the dog then he should atleast be getting out of sight. Maybe I am way off but I would want a med-long range dog to atleast get out of sight when I put him on the ground. If the owner said that he hunted 800 yards then the dog hunts at your feet then I would question the owner. A 500 and a 1500 dollar dog is a big differance. I took chances on dogs for 300,500 and another one at 500. I will not chance 1k on a dog.
  I would ask the owner to extend the trial for another month at least.

well in my opinon there is no such thang as a finished dog until there dead.im 28 years old and i learn sumthin new all the time and so will a dog.next thing is if i was to buy a dog that was soposed to be good hog dog i wud expect that dog no matter what his range to cover ground and hunt hard.if i was u i wud hunt the dog by himself cause if he cant find and shut one down by himself then he is only a started dog ,which from what ur saying is not what ur trying to buy.
