I amost posted this question the other day and after readind the other topic about dogs barking I decided I would. I worked for a lady one time that worked for a vet and they had a australian shepard that had his voicebox took out because of his constant barking. I know you couldnt do it with your strike dogs but if you had a mouthy bulldog I dont know what it what hurt. He dont need to bark anyway. What do you guys think?

I think that would be a bad idea. How would the dog comunicate with you. You should take the time to train him to do what you want him to or find someone that can do it for you.

I think it would be an excellent idea  Wink. If i were made of money i would do it for sure, my luck is it would die of heat stroke the very next hunt.  Angry A freind of mine who hunts visla bird dogs does it for all the ones he keeps in the city b/c of a crazy neighbor, last i was at his house i think he had 4 like that, they were perfectly happy dogs without a voice box!

I know of a few I would love to have had removed.  I don't know how hard it would be on the dog but quiet sure is nice!

I dont need him to comunicate with me. I dont have a dog like that I was just curious to see what other people thought.

if you train some manners into your dog you can get them to quit that.  not saying you don't but if you work on your dog enough you should be able to stop the unwanted behavior just like anything else.

If someone has an effective method to make a catchdog not make a sound while hunting I bet you could quite your job and start a new business.  I have had some quiet and some not, the ones that were not were not going to change their mind about it.  When the switch flips and it was game time it is very hard to get their attention and make them learn that you would like for them to be quiet.  I am not saying it can't be done but it is very hard to do.  If I had a noisy dog I liked in every other way and I could pay $150-$200 to make them quiet as a mouse I would do it pretty quick.  I think the biggest deterent for me would be cost since the surgery would likely cost more than a different dog.

I forget what show I was watchin, it was a while back. But part of it was how these guys were poaching in a state forest, they had the dogs voice boxes removed and just tied a bunch of bells to their collar so that they could follow them.

it's no different than makin a lab quiet on his platform or in his box while he's watchin birds hit the water or field in front of him.  it can be done, it's how much time you want to spend on your dog just like anything else.  it's not an involuntary response like a nervous tick or something.  the whining is no different than a catchdog pullin hard on the end of a lead when gettin led to a bay, just a different problem you're addressing.  whining or pullin on a lead, it all comes down to manners/handle.

Either way yall want to look at it if I had one I liked and he had a whining problem or barking problem I would do it. I would say it is just as good a solution as breaking him or her from it.

But trying to compare labs to bulldogs is like compareing good whiskey to 3 day old tea.  They are both drinks but are totally different.  A bulldogs intensity is 5 fold to that of a labs and yes i have been around duck dogs.  I believe in good handle but dont think there is enough handle in the world for some catch dogs they just are that intense when it comes to catching a hog and hardheaded they will revert back to whining and that constantly telling them to shut up is a pain in the rear

I agree 100%.  one of the best catch dogs I ever seen was a whiner, and nobody could "persuade" him to be quite when the bay dogs were workin'.  I have one that whines a little.  not bad, but she is gonna whine.

i'm not saying a lab is the same as a bulldog.  but there drive can be just as hard.  if you've ever trained any labs from trial bred parents they are very driven more than some of the bulldogs i've seen other people own.  when it comes down to it, it's still no different than breakin that same dog from jerkin your arm off when you're leading it to a bay.   how do ya'll get around that behavioral problem?

I'm no expert by no means, what works for me works for me, I have pesonaly raised my own catch dogs, and their handle is better than some kids that i know, I have a full blooded gator breed gyp bull  that makes hunting a pleasure, I dont even lead the gyp when im on foot, going to the bay, she waits for me to say the word, whinning, what whinning....LOL  no B.S. if were hunting the gyp rides in the basket on my 4 wheeler, if i want to listen all i say is''Listen'' and that gyp will hold her breath to see if she can also hear the dogs baying no whinning, no barking and no pulling, Granite i raised this gyp, when she got down as bad as i hated to ,, i had to buy another c.d. male, red and a catching machine, but ill as they come as far as handle, he was 2 or 3 then, pull on you whine, bark with dog aggresion! now a year and a half later just like i like them, must have been the wispers in his ear LMAO, some times i think it might b the dog some times the handler, if a man can make a 1500lb horse give to him and do what is asked , than why cant that man do it with a 50lb dog?  ............Man this is alot of typing, off the soap box now........Jmo thats all
