Well... i've always heard a female dog called a gyp. Brood gyp, for example... she's been bred right?

I beleive gyp was origanlly used to refer to a female dog less than a year old so therefore it would have not had any pups.

Mike may wanna move it this to the discussion i didnt mean to still Marshalls thread i really wasnt sure but after reading the web ther is others that think the same that a Gyp refers to a female dog that has not been breen or a female that can not produce pups. May be a good discussion

That clears it up some, because I always grew up hearing old timer's calling female dogs a year old and younger as a bitch dog, and the word gyp was always used for a female that has had pups, everyone just left off the brood part.

A gyp is a female dog that has not reached 1yr of age, it is also a very common name for female dogs in england. After a female has reached 1yr of age she is considered a bitch, unless she has been bred before 1yr of age then she is considered a brood gyp.

i read GYP used to mean Good Young Prospect, male or female. somewhere along the line it got switched up. but they way i hear everyone use it now, i think its just a better word for bitch, and quicker to say than girl dog.

I always thought it was used instead of the word "bitch" to not offend some people.
