I have some dogs that had fleas when I got them, they are flea free now but have tape worms from them. I was wondering what is the best way to get rid of them, I have tried lots of stuff but nothings working.

Thanks for the info bryant,i did a little research and found out that garlic juice will kill any worms and prevent fleas and ticks. Don't know how true this is but I'm going to try it to find out.

Just to let everyone know, I have been feeding my dogs 1 tbsp of minced garlic once a day. The tapeworms have been dropping like flies, idk why this is working but it is. Total cost was around 3 dollars cheapest wormer I have used.

If your still seeing them in the poop, what you are seeing are shed segments and the dog is still actively infected.
When the worms are killed, they will die and be absorbed into the system and you will see no more signs. Dogs won't poop a glob of tapeworms like they will roundworms.

large amounts of garlic is not good for the dog. I feed garlic in very, very small amounts.

As Bryant said, you still have a happy healthy tape worm. Go to your feed store and get you a tube of Zimectrin Gold. Give them a clot about as big as a M&M and your problems will be solved. There was a thread not long ago in the dog doctor section about this. It runs about $16 to $18 bucks for a tube around here and it will do several dogs. You will end up spending more than that messing with cheap wormers, expellers and home remidies and still will likely have worms and end up having to buy it anyways.

Garlic is TOXIC to dogs......
I worm monthly with IVOMEC and SAFEGUARD paste.
Every 6 months I take all dogs to vet and get him to give them the works. (Wide range or wormer he mixes up) Cost me $14 for 5 dogs total. Seems to keep everyone healthy.

Us horse folks have been using the "power pack" method for years (before and after they came out with products like zimecterin gold). My vet still recommends it. Panacur or safeguard alone in a regular dose won't clear tapes, but a double dose given daily for five days in a row sure will. I'm in the middle of a run of power pack on dogs at our place. Had a few fleas pop up late in the year and two of the dogs came up with tapes. I do the safe guard method still because not knowing the exact dosage on the horse type paste wormers is a little un nerving to me. With safe guard, I can draw the liquid up in the syrenge and be pretty exact on dosages.
If you have a flea, you have tape worms somewhere in your pack. Fleas are terrible, and the tape worms just add insult to injury. I saw segments in three dogs' stools, so the whole pack is getting treated. I know it is really a whole different topic, but the couple of fleas I had in november were the first ones since I treated with comfortis in early july. Treated one dose of comfortis in the midst of a horrific flea infestation and I did not treat the grounds except in one kennel. Flea problem was wiped out in two days. Unbelievable stuff.
Cheers M

i had pretty much the same experience with the comfortis. It's spendy but it's still cheaper than tapeworms.

Zimectrin Gold works well for us...2 notches on the syringe is about the size of a M&M, small dogs and pups we only give them 1 notch on the syringe. Will Ivomec do the same as zemetrin gold? No! Ivomectin will NOT clear tapeworm of any strains............ I think Zimectrin Gold has a hint of Ivomec in it, it'll pretty much take care of everything...

I do know that when i was a kid, my dad used some old methods of doctoring our animals. He would make meatballs with raw garlic in it and feed it to our dogs twice a year, not sure why. If our dogs had a wound he would mix sulfur powder and vaseline to make a paste and apply the the wound. And for fleas, LOL he would dunk them in a vat of malathon and then clip their heads up close to the fence where they couldn't lick or roll until they were dry. We had very healthy dogs. Anyway, maybe there is something to the use of garlic.

Will Ivomec do the same as zemetrin gold? No! Ivomectin will NOT clear tapeworm of any strains............ Zimecterin Gold has 1.55% ivermectin 7.75% praziquantel. Ivomec has less than 1% ivermectin and no praziquantel. That month that you use Z. Gold you can skip 1 or 2 months of Heartworm Prevention if you are using Ivomec for heartworm preventative.

Try WORM-X!! I get it from Jeffers. By the largest pills and break them in half or quarters and they go way farther. I had a dog with tape worms and tried everything. Ivomec will not kill a tape worm. Tried Wom-X one time and that was the end of my problems. I give my dogs Ivomec, Worm-X, and Comfortis every month are so. I usualy hold off on the comfortis until I see a flea. It will knock fleas back like it ain't even funny. The Worm-X is by far the best wormer I have ever seen though.
