My catahoula gyp has not came into heat in a year. Im just wondering whats going on.
She missed her last one.
I know some dogs only come in once a year, but she had 2 a year up until now.
Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Been thinking about this and was wondering if over heating or heat stroke could have an effect on their cycle?

Well sir, many of the olympic female athletes have few or no cycles. It seems that they are carrying no fat and exercising heavily and it shuts down the reproductive hormones the same as if they were starving. I don't have any proof that it would happen with dogs but it makes sence to me that it could have the same effect if you are keeping the bitch lean and working her hard. Just another possibility to ponder and no real answer.      John

I've been wonderin the same thing.  I've got a BMC gyp that I want pups off of BAD and she's only had 1 heat and it was her first heat at about a year old.  Well she's roughly 2 and hasn't came in again that I know of.  And I'm ready to breed, I've got the male picked out and everything.  Would like to know if anyone has had this problem and is there anything I can do to speed this process along.

I havent been hunting her very hard in this past year.
I dont think that it is a silent heat because she is in a pen with a male dog, and he don't show no interest in her.

But about 8 months ago she had a hog bayed up for about an hour, and once we caught it she could barely walk, falling over, etc.
Maybe this could have stessed her enough to shut down her reproductive system?
She was due to come in about 2 weeks after and it never happened, and she also missed her last one.

I was told by a grey breeder that alot of their gyps don't come in heat while in heavy training and racing.

My gyp only comes in every 12 to 14 months and she had a heat stroke 2 years ago and she is 6 this year and had a litter of pup 1 1/2 ago, which I thought my make her normal but no still 12 to 14 months apart.

it could help if you had a female that she could cycle with i know when i used to breed show hogs ( and dont know if its the same) but if you brought a new hog that didnt cycle into a group that had a regular cycle it would get that hog to cycle with the group... again dont know if its the same.

 just my 2 cents.

Low body fat can cause a dogs cycle to quit just like in most mammals but it could help to bring her around other females that are in heat and add a few pounds to her. If these don't work there is a shot that can be given by your vet that will normally bring a dog in. and if these do not work you might have to find a specialist to figure it out

There are a couple methods to prematurely induce a heat cycle but they are a bit complicated, there are many risks involved and quite frankly are not that reliable.

Here's some reading.

John, your bitch looks to be in wonderfully good hunting shape to me. A little on the thin side but not showing hip or backbones. If I were to want a good litter of pups from her I would try to put about 10lb on her. The reason I say this is that the pups will draw her down fast and if she starts thin it is nearly impossible to keep ahead of this drawdown even with the best feed. A few pounds will also make her more receptive to breeding and taking. If you are not hunting her much it might be good to give this a try. USHOG is right on the money with having other bitches in the yard in heat. Ever noticed how one bitch comes into heat and the whole yard is in heat in a week or so. Hope you can figure out the puzzle and get a litter out of that fine looking bitch.    John

Thanks for all the responses guys, I dont think she has proven herself enough to be bred yet, but hopefully in another year or so she will be ready and she will come into heat.

And also, she does NOT gain weight, it doesn't matter how much I feed her, or what I feed her kibble/raw. And she gets wormed regularly.

I had the same problem last year with some of my hounds and a guy told me to try wheat germ oil, I gave them 2 cc a day in food or squirt down the throat. Both bitches came in, one was 7 yrs old and had skipped the previous cycle. I don't know anything about the shot except my vet said that it would be better to stay away from it.
