We headed out to Waller County this morning with a business associate of Chris and Mandi's that's been wanting to go on a hog hunt. Started off on the wrong foot when the puppies stretched out a possum. Evil Finally, after covering most of the ranch, we found the hogs on the opposite corner from where we turned out at. They were bayed across the creek and had two decent hogs run by us. The creek was up from the rain, so we drove around to them and ended up with this 125# boar. The dogs rolled out... and kept going and going. They finally ended up bayed over two miles from us. After driving about four or five miles, we got to Tweety and Brandy bayed solid. We eased up within a 100 yards and sent in Clifford and Tyson. Sure enough, the hog broke before they hit him... a big boar that ran by us. Got the catchdogs caught up and headed back to the buggies. The two black dogs were two more miles in another direction... Lizzy was three miles back the other way! Somewhere along the race, the Ruby puppy fell in and we got within 600 yards of the dogs who were out in a big lake. I guess they lost the hog in the water and started heading back. We went and picked up one of my pups and then Lizzy and called it a day. Only ended up with one, but the dogs sure did cover some ground. This was Mike's first hog hunt... I think he had a good time.

Yours truly...

Mike and Chris...

Good deal. I agree, your dogs were sure covering ground!  My potlickers just don't go that far.

The first thing that caught my eye was it looked like the hog was tied with mule tape and the blue nylon and chain lead. Its funny because all my leads are just like that, blue nylon and half chain. I use them to drag the hogs out with, in addition to tying dogs.

It was a fun hunt, even if we did get smoked by the big boar. I guess if we won every time, it would not be near as much fun.

Crackerc,
Mike and I each ordered a handful of new leads last week. He had some that looked to be relics from the 1800's, that were still operable, so we went back to the same maker and got some new ones.  His are all red, mine are all blue. Makes it real easy at the end of the hunt to know who each lead belongs to.

Cull Buck,
The dogs covered some ground for sure. At times the puppies are hunting out further than I would care for. Yesterday my Ruby pup, and Mike's Striker pup were out between 1.3 to 1.5 miles and when I checked Ruby's collar after the hunt it showed a hair over 31 miles for the day, though she did ride the buggy the last couple of miles.

Thanks everyone, Mike didn't hesitate... he got right down in the creek with me and grabbed a leg. A lot of first timers back peddle when the time comes. Grin

Minus a couple of screw ups, we were real proud of those young dogs yesterday.

We had a rookie with us on Saturday that wouldn't get within 20 yards of a caught hog.  Definately a cull....LMAO!  Wink
