In my many years of hunting with dogs and I've owned many dogs especilly cur dogs. It seems that the red dogs make much better strike dogs.I'm talken about really good strike dogs. I've had way more yellow dogs than red but when I look back to the best strike dogs I've ever owned and for some reason 80 % of them come out red..Is this just my luck here or is there something to it.WHAT IS YA'LL TAKE ON THIS The red ones seems to bark less on the track too.. i wonder where the red came from originally? could it be athrowback to a hound, or maybe just a recessive gene.

Jude hart had a brindle brood bioch that threw yellow blk mouth, red blk mouth and brindle blk mouth in the same litter. I had the same too...I've had very few culls out of the real dark red dogs...i don't understand unless its aq hound throwback...

She is out of James Davis (JD) line of dogs not JD Howard. Those were some good looking dogs on that site though.

I like'em too. But from speaking with Steve...they're a little too rough for my taste and they wear the stories. If I remember right, he uses them to find and catch.

Good looking dogs on that site, but I don't necessarily agree with his theory regarding the bobbed tails.
I have heard through the years about different colors of the same breed dog being this or that. It seems to me that a lot of older more experience dog-men than myself even swear by saddleback dogs. Just as an example, we took one to Uncle Earls this year and sold it to a guy who chased us through the parking lot as we pulled in. At least two more times throughout the weekend we had guys come by our camp and ask specifically if we had any saddleback dogs for sale. One guy mentioned he had been walking around trying to buy every saddleback he could find. Is there anything to it??? Who knows...

Seems to me that the yellow black mouth color was the one that was popularized with the breed, and like when anything gets popularized it gets watered down with bad breedings because dog peddlin people just want to push yellow dogs and they stop breeding for good cur dogs. There fore it might be you gotta wade throught allot of yella dogs because of them folks. But they could care less about the reds, brindles and blacks so any dog that was bred which was that color(other than yella) was bred because it was a top notch dog by a guy who was looking for more than just a dog to peddle onto someone else. In other words, if a dog carries the gene for red or any one of the other colors to me that means he comes from stock that was not watered down by popularity. I could be wrong but thats what I always figgured.

Scott,
It has been proven that certain traits can be attached to color genes. Take the Catahoula for instance which in some cases has a deafness problem which is attached to the double merle gene. The common line of thought is a mostly white or white face with cracked eye Catahoula has the potential for deafness. Phenotype is not always indicative of a dog having the double merle gene, as some white dogs are not carriers. The only true way to determine this is through DNA testing which I would venture to say most people who breed these dogs aren't going to do.
Waylon,
Good point. Not to pick on Catahoula's, but I feel that what you have said can pretty much be applied to that breed (and probably more so than BMC's) as well. Lots of people breeding for eye and coat color without regard to all the other desirable qualities that make the dogs more than pets.

Well I am guilty for wanting ONLY the yellow cur because that is what i was used to hunting with and seeing and if it wasnt yellow it wasnt a cur. Well with the years i have figured out that there is other breeds of cur and most of them are better and hunt harder and have more bottom then the typical ybmc. And that is because much like waylon said and as the catahoula breed has gone too and that is breeding for looks and not hunt and drive. Therefore, I am now wanting only curs from hunting backgrouund and known line breedings. And i think that u get these diffrent colors because people are mixing curs and thought they are still curs they just have been breed to hunt becuase someone took a good hunting male and a good hunting femal and breed them to have great hunting pups.

Cody,,I have had a lot of red dogs and had to cull very few. Most red dogs at least make medioker dogs by my standards. I would say 50 % of the red dogs I've trained made decent strike dogs..I've only owned maybe 5 crackerjack strike dogs in my life.I've owned many good strike dogs but only 5 or 6 that was what I call crackerjack.3 has been red,,one yellowblk mouth & one brindle..I've never owned any dog that did'nt have some kind of fault..Then again I'm a pretty harsh judge of strike dogs,,lol You know how it is about the time you start to brag on one too much !!! lol

Here are some articles on color coat, for what i have seen there are certain traits that can be attached to a color due to genenetic makeup of breed of dog.like when the Mountain cur in the beginning was formed there was a few diferent styles in the phenotype and not to mention, that the breeders that wanted to go in different directions between cur or hound as they broke off they became the PLOTT HOUND,TENN. BRINDLE CUR,ORIGANAL MOUNTAIN CUR AND KEMMER CUR these dogs where yellow, red, brindle, saddle back, black, and rigneck, but alll these dogs go back to a certain genetic base and from there they were bred for traits and phenotype http://homepage.usask.ca/~schmutz/dogcolors.htmlActually the plott hound came from Germany with the plott family of NC and likely traces back to a brindle dog they still have over there that still verry much resembles it (Hanoverian Schweisshund). The only publicized out crosses that I have read about were to lepord curr (not catahoula) and old time black and tans that ran by "Belvins hound" although there were most likely more outcrosses over the years that werent let out. I will try to find the history of them and post it on another topic, at the least it is a good read.

Not to say that there are not good yella dogs and that I have not owned a few but out of the five black mouth dog that were good enough to ride for my brand 4 of them are RED. This topic has got me to thinkin so I called up my dad and grandpa to refresh my thoughs and asked them to think back and comare the yellas, reds and brindle dogs they have owned and might I add Thats all we have rasied for 3 generations is Black mouths Yella, Reds and Brindle. Response was COLOR don't matter so my next Question was what was your best three dogs you can remember and out of the six 3 reds, 1 yella and 2 brindle. I would have to say out of the 3 best I have owned it would have to be 1 of each. I can aslo say that we bred to best to the best and color is of the least of importantance. I don't think color matters but it does make one think is it just a coindence or is there more to it. Waylon makes a good point in his comment.
