on monday, june 2nd, hipokets and myself, played hooky and left about noon and drove over to the colorado river bottom and started talking to farmers, looking for new country to hunt. as we rode drinking soda waters and telling manly stories, the question came up on how dogs get named.
most hunters have had a red, whitey, buck, $h1thead or some other cool name.
so the question i am asking is how do you name your dogs. i have used girls names, the name of the person i got the dog from or just picked one.
so lets hear the story. capt jack

This might get long, so I'll tone it down. Grin

Hank - female, yellow black mouth cur, tough girl, reminded me of "Hank" the cow Dog.
Wart - male, reg. Catahoula, from Tyler, TX, covered in fireant bites when I got him.
Possum - female, white, black and gray Catahoula, from Monroe, LA, long slender nose, scissor mouthed like a possum.
Jack - Possum's brother, short for Jacka$$! Thought his job was done once the hog was located and left the scene.
Bonnie - Wart's sister, blue merle, short for "Bonita" meaning pretty girl.
Kate - female, Bonnie and Wart's sister, brown with black saddle back. Longest range dog I've hunted over.
Gracie - female, walker, Catahoula cross, sounds pretty when bayed.
Mouse - female, Catahoula, pit, plott, who knows what else squeaks like a mouse instead of barking.
Sadie - female, white brindle pit catchdog.
Soko - female, black mtn. cur, rescoued from starvation, non hunting home.
Waldo - male, Tx. Mason Catahoula, rescued from starvation and sent back to Mr. Mason once rehabilitated.
Chewy - male, brown pit, huge head, rescued stray.
Bo - male, white bulldog, catchy, took in trade for Waldo from Mr. Mason.
Cap'n - white bulldog, rescued, well mannered house dog at one time, catch dog now.

That's about all I can think of for now. Wink

I raise most all my own dogs from pups. The pups that go too their new owners I try to keep tabs on so I can tell what is going on with my bloodlines, so when some dogs undoubtly change hands over the years it's hard to keep up with sometimes but something I started doing is naming the dogs on "themes" per litter, the new owners can name them as they please but I explain why I am doing it and most get into the "theme" with me. That way if later somebody tells me the name of the dog, I know what litter it came from, well atleast until the rest of my memory starts failing Tongue I got the idea from my mother, she used to raise, train and show dogs when I was growing up, and she would do alphabet theme and each litters registerd name always started with the same letter.

here are some examples:
litter -  "Gambling" - Joker, Deuce, Lotto, Texas Rose, Ace, Black Jack
Litter - "Cleaners"- Comet, Clorox
Litter- "Trucks"- Chevy, Dodge
litter- "Disney movie characters"- Tarzan, Mowgli, Mater, Copper, Cheif, Balleu, this litter is only 4 weeks so names are not set yet, but these are some of the choices

here are some others that weren't in themes
Captain
Lucy
Cotton
Smoochy
Titus Pullo
Xerox - Dads name is "Rock" & mommas name is "Zena" so combined is "Zee-Rocks"
Rolee from his momma is Jo-Lee
Nugget
Sherry
Roo
Buzzard
Earl -female
Happy
Nasty

Ive got a yella dog named "Tater" that is the daddy to the "Brandy" pups I have right now and I am thinking of naming one of his pups "Spud" and another "Crispy".  I also named my black pup "Crow" because he is coal black and he lets you know when there is something in the woods, like a crow.  I have a pup named "Tiny" she was the runt of the litter.  "Smiley" because she smiles at everybody when they approach her.  "Chunk" because he looks so blocky and bulky.  "Scout" english pointer that will find the birds for you and covers a lot of county.  I have a few others that are good but I am waiting on the right pup to use the names.

We tend to run with the "themes" in naming our dogs and some livestock.

Dogs, we started with Mexican names.
Hopie
Lupe
Dinero

Then we had the two hurricane pups, they could be a little destructive and just blew in and out of the barn aisle
Rita
Trina (short for Katrina)

Some of our Fainting goats have Texas town names

Blanco
Llano
Alpine
Eden
Mason - goat dog
London - LGD
Brady - LGD
Guadalupe
Travis

Most of our dogs are bought and come with their names.

Meathead
Patches
Tyson - the ear biter
Split
Dusty
Hunter

Our Aussie dogs have L names

Lacey
Lena
Leroy
Lolita (Jesse)

Entertaining thread.

James, How did you come up with Rilo?

My small pack:

Tonka - female jagdterrier - Picked her up just outside of Buffalo, Missouri. Tatonka is supposed to be Souix for Buffalo. The tough little toy truck also played a part.

Tinker - female jagdterrier - As in Tinkertoy. Just thought it fit a little dog.

Jester - male jagdterrier - A wild little joker(court jester). A co-worker is a member of a biker club called the Jesters in Thialand.

Hula - female pit X mt.cur - Hula as in hoop. She wags from her nose to her tail. I think she could hulahoop.

Scamp - male border collie - A stray that I took in about the time my daughter saw Disney's Lady and the Tramp movie. Scamp was a stray in the movie.

Yeah, he's on our yard alright... And in our yard, and out of our yard, and on our porch, and in our house.

I accidentally called him Cotton the other day :O)

Lena one of my Lacy pups was already named as well.
Monster my other Lacy pup was a real monster before i got him.  He would attack other puppies and even latched on one.  Figured the name fit him.
