first thing i would do is find out as much about the guy trying to sell you the dog as possible ( references) .

dogs like that arent sold very often, so you will have to wait on the right dog to come along..

There will be alot more guys selling pot lickers than guys having good dogs for sale.
If you can try the dogs in the area you will be hunting and then if you like the way the dog hunts ask for a trial 2 or 3 week trial.
If they won't give you the time to atleast hunt the dog a couple of times then Its your decision on taking their word for it. Most folks word is not worth anything anymore.
If the seller is rushing you, offering more than they should, promissing alot, won't give trial, they are hiding something beware
If it sounds to good to be true most of the time it is.

If you ever get up in the Wharton area give me a call My dogs are not for sale but we hunt like your friend does  but our dogs hunt deeper and I have several diff breeds you can watch hunt.
Free hunt just bring your rubber boots.

First mistake is tellin someone that your willing to pay that kind of money for somethin you dont seem to understand.
I would research different breeds and their styles of huntin.
Bark on trail, long range, short range or med range, their are differnet characteristics you should look for depending on the property your runnin. 300 acres tract are small, sayin that you really dont want a long range dog. Just somethin like what that gentlemen runs seems right.
Plotts, cat, bmc, cur cross/pit, the list goes on their are plenty of dogs with diff. styles available.
Just my opinion.

most every body has bought a potlicker or two it dont make it right to take advantage of a new comer but they will  if ya let them your best bet is to buy some dogs from your friends ya hunt with to start with  or get a young  dog and train it up with your buddys the dog fever will get costly on the pocket book no matter how much ya got to spend
