Well it will be hard to find a good strike dog this time of year!!! You might have better luck near summser time to deer season when people are slowing down on hunting!!! I talk to atleast one person a week looking to buy strike dogs!!!!! Not saying they ain't one out there!! If you go to just buying dogs you will pay for your education quick!!! But I thank you have done more homework than most have that has got into hunting!! Just becarful!!

Craig,
You aint wrong there.
Everwhere you go theres  a hog problem.
Back about 10 yrs ago My friend from Tishamingo talked me into bringing my Dogs and my Airboat up to the Red river and doing a little dogging.
We had a great trip and caught a bunch of pork along with some nice stripers.

Surely this isnt a serious thread. The guy registered his account today at 6:45pm and is making comments like that.

Every thread seems a little extreme....

I did just register to this fourm.
I just found out about it on Saturday when I was hunting with a guy that was going to school down here in Kingsville.
If you read the original topic it states that I have been hunting with an old man now for a couple of months now and have been gathering as much info on this sport.
I try not to be the dumbest dude around So I gather as much knowledge as I can at whatever I decide to do.
I wanted to start Offshore fishing I went 3 times with a captain and ordered my new 38' Center Console Donzi
I wanted to start Bowhunting I bought the best Eq available.
When I wanted to start Bowfishing I went with a guy from Corpus Christi a few time in his fan boat,Soon after I ordered a new Diamondback airboat.
And off I went.
So this sport is no different I will dive in as I always do.

Take my word for it Money is the last thing they are worried about.
His dad called me about some dogs, He wants to get him started hunting to keep him out of trouble.
Everything this kid has posted is 100%.
What take the rest of us years to acheive, He will be able to do in just a few weeks.

trahan welcome to the board..i don't know you so i won't say you are blowing smoke up anything..i would say just cause you have the cash doesn't mean you need to spend it foolishly.

if i were you i would get a garmin system first. i'd hunt with some people on different properties to test their dogs out. if you see something you really like(put them on the garmin and see which one covers the most ground and which one is out front). if you really like that dog. i would hunt with it a few more times and if it is still the one covering the most ground and leading the pack i would try to buy it.

dogs are different than buying hunting equip. most hunting equip will do what you ask it to do, dogs are different. they have minds so they don't always do what you want them to do. if i pay 40K for a corvette i'm pretty sure it will roast up most 10K sport cars. you can buy a 2K dog and my free gyp very well will out strike, out bay, and out stop your 2K dog(not saying she will but she very well could). in your mind you have now lost 2K on a dog that if you had just waited you would be more happy with.

there will be a lot of pms coming your way selling you dogs, some of them will be really good dogs some will be straight junk. i think it is a bad idea to say "i have the money i don't mind blowing it." even the really wealthy make educated choices. if i were you i would take one of these really experience dog men with you when you are testing out a dog to potentially buy and let them tell you whether you should spend your money on that dog. that way you have an unbiased experience opinion on the dog. get someone that doesn't know you from adam so there is no personal stock involved. if i had the cash that is what i would do...

with all that land if you ever want someone to run with you give me a buzz. i'm not selling you any of my dogs i just like hunting different areas to test my dogs, so if you would like to make a run holler at me.

if you want some names of some people who i think are good honest people that can help you evaluate a dog pm me and i will point you in their direction.

again welcome and i look forward to hearing your stories and maybe getting together for a hunt!!!

i also think you should get some experienced doggers with you to show you the ropes. you can get some damn good dogs and YOU can screw them up cause YOU don't know what you're doing. sending the catchdog too far out, pushing the dogs past sign, etc. i've been where have just a few short years ago, i know a lot of pitfalls young guys make...hell i still make some mistakes..good luck to you.

Thanks,
This is what I was originally looking for when I signed on to this site.
I only post that I can afford the dogs to let sellers know Im not waisting anyones time.
I have worked out with a couple guys on here to help me look at new potential dogs.
Southtexas dogger has contacted me and is willing to help me get started without wanting any money.
He told me upfront he did not need the money and I could not buy any of his dogs.
He was recommended by the old man I started with.
So I will go from here.
Thanks for all the positive post here.

If you are interested in financing a good Cur dog breeding program.  I can find the dogs to start it with if you are willing to buy them.   Grin

No seriously, this is a good place to learn and get ideas but like others have said you are going to get opinions and not necessarily facts.  Just do some reading and take it with a grain of salt.  If you read about a certain kind of dog and want to know more go up in he right hand corner at the search type it in and old post on the same subject will show up.  You can do the same for specific people, if you think you might like the way they hunt, search thier name and read thier old posts to learn more about the way they do it.

I would start with a good Cur dog of some kind.  Black mouth Cur, Catahoula, Lacy dog, or just a Common Cur, or cross of any of the above.  They are the best for the job in my opinion.

Robert
Welcome to the board.  My suggestion to you is to find some one that might have the type dogs you want and go hunting with them a few times to see the dogs hunt and then decide what you like or don't like.
I have people calling every week looking for dogs and after I listen to them I know I don't have what they are looking for and try to send them in the direction that might be helpful to them.
I hunt a lot of dogs for other people and some times run across a good one that might be for sale.
If your out west of Houston let me know because working dogs every day and always enjoy the visit.

Buy from some one that thinks enough of his dogs to be willing to take them back if they don't suite you.  I've seen some dogs just hunt different with different people.
Good luck.

Thanks,

I will stay in touch on raising dogs.
Our kennels are being built now. Should have room for around 30 dogs.
I would like to have a good team of dogs probably 7 to 10 now.
My dad and I talked about raising some later on thats why he built the kennels so big.
And I thinks you are correct about hunting with several diff dogs before I pull the trigger on some dogs that might be trash.
When I called Southtexas dogger last night this was the 1st thing he suggested was to not get in any hurry.
He said I can have all the money in the world and have 30 dogs that wont catch hogs.
Or I can have 7 to 10 dogs that will get the job done.
He also told me money was no issue for him either and he has been hunting hogs for over 20 yrs and still trying to put that perfect team of dogs together.

Mr.Mason.

I've heard good things about you from here.
If you do find a dog that will work for me let me know asap.
I would like to see your bay pen.
The old man I hunted with told me I needed to build one and you had a nice one to see.
I come to Houston several times a month with my dad.
I could come by your place.

If your ever down here around Corpus let me know. I have a 100 acre pen that we train dogs in and I can show you the difference in some of the types of dogs such as the ones being silent and the ones being open. That way you can decide what is the best for you. You can ask Mr. Tanner about us and some of the others on here as we try to help others get started to promote this great sport of ours.  Thanks Glenn

I have only been hunting with my own dogs for a couple of years now. I read what everyone on here has to say. I don't reply very much. All I can say is there are some of people on here that will be more than willing to sell you there worst dog and telling you it's their best. I know from experiance. Unlike you I didn't  find out who the best people to talk to where. I hunted with people for a year or so and decided I wanted some dogs. My buddies didn't have any pups and wouldn't sell any of there dogs. I bought a dog that was supposed to be finished and was a long way from being that. My best dog is a brindal BMC gyp and she was given to me. I don't know how old you are but I am 25 and like you when I want to start doing something I jump in, most of the time up to my neck. I have to have the best equipment that is avalible at that time. All I am trying to say is take your time and find the right dogs for you, and remember you don't have to pay top dollar for a good dog.

WELCOME TO THE SITE,
FIRST OFF THE GUYS ARE RIGHT ABOUT DOG JOCKEYS// PEOPLE SELLING YOU CULLS TO MAKE A DOLLAR... NEVER AND I MEAN NEVER GET A DOG WITHOUT A TRIAL, IF SOMEONE ISNT WILLING TO LET THE DOG PROVE IT SELF TO YOU, 99 PERCENT OF THE TIME ITS BEACUSE IT WONT. YOU CAN FIND A DOG THAT COSTS THAT MUCH THAT IS A JAM UP STRIKE DOG, I NEVER SAY A DOG IS REALLY FINISHED BECAUSE I BELIEVE THEY CAN ALWAYS IMPROVE AND JUST LIKE HUMANS YOU LEARN MORE AND MORE THINGS EVERYDAY, BUT ANYWAY THERE ARE ACTUALLY SOME PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT WILL SELL YOU A JAM UP DOG FOR A CHEAPER PRICE BECAUSE THEY LIKE TO HELP OUT AND ARENT JUST TRYIN TO MAKE MONEY OFF OF SOME NEW KID. I HAVE GOTTEN REALLY GREAT DOGS FROM 300-800 DOLLARS. BUT MOST OF THE TIME ITS FROM PEOPLE WE KNEW. TRY TO MEET SOME OF THE GUYS ON HERE, AND HUNT WITH THEM IF THEY GIVE YOU AN INVITE OR OFFER THEM TO GO WITH YOU SO YOU CAN SEE HOW THEY AND THEIR DOGS HUNT, AND SOME JUST MAY COME UP OFF OF A GOOD DOG FOR YOU IF THEY SEE YOU ARE A GOOD PERSON AND THINK ITS WORTH IT. ALWAYS LISTEN MORE THAN YOU TALK, THERES ALOT TO LEARN AND THE MORE YOU LISTEN THE MORE YOU WILL LEARN. WHEN YOU HUNT WITH PEOPLE ALWAYS TRY TO MAKE A GOOD HAND. WHERE EXACTLY ARE YOU LOCATED, COME GRAIN SEASON WE HAVE SOME PRETTY BIG PLACES TO HUNT AND MY DAD AND I WOULDNT MIND YA COMIN ALONG IF YOU'D LIKE I LIVE IN WEST COLUMBIA WHICH IS ABOUT 45 MILES SOUTHWEST OF HOUSTON. WE HUNT WITH CURS MOSTLY, BMC (BLACK MOUTH CURS) OUR MAIN DOG RIGHT NOW, WHICH IS STILL A PUP BEACUSE WE ARE JUST GETTIN BACK INTO THE SPORT, IS BMC AND KEMMER CUR, AND WE USE PITBULLS FOR OUR CD (CATCH DOGS) WE PRETTY MUCH ONLY HUNT SILENT DOGS, IN OPINION MOUTHY DOGS ON TRACK WILL BREAK A BAY, AND IVE WITNESSED THIS MANY TIMES, A SEMI OPEN ISNT TOO BAD BUT IMO YOU DONT WANT A FULL OPEN MOUTHED DOG... ANYWAYS I HOPE SOME OF THIS RAMBLIN ADVICE HELPED IF YA HAVE ANY QUESTIONS OR ANYTHING MY DADS BEEN HUNTIN FOR YEARS IF I DNT KNO IT THEN HE PROLLY WILL. JUST SHOOT A PM OR MY CELL IS 979-618-6352 .. HAPPY HUNTING AND GOOD LUCK!
