Watched a video of some hog catching down under and those boys were using big ole Great Dane crosses to catch with. I've always used a bulldog and can't imagine using anything else. Has anyone on here ever used anything other than a bulldog or bulldog cross as thier catchdog?

yeah i know a guy that uses a dane and i've got a rescue dane to start on hogs. the difference in using the dane crosses and other crosses, which most of the ozzie dogs have some sort of bull blood in them too, is those dogs are bred to find and catch a pig all by themself. No pack of bay dogs, just one dog and one pig, preferably each dog is going to grab a seperate pig, and hopefully it'll be the biggest out of the group.
i'm pretty sure that about sums it up. there are obvious other people on this board that know more about than i do but that's the basic rundown.

I've hunted behind straight catch catahoulas and straight catch mountain curs. Never saw either one bay, just catch. I've been told by others that at some point they would "cur out" and start baying, but I never saw it.

i am one in a few on this site and around the hog dog world, but im all about the boxer!! i raise boxers and i have started to keep some and train. i have a 6 months old that i think will change some people minds about the boxer. she is only 6 months old but she is flat out pig crazy. i let her bite down and hold one time but pulled her off in effort not to ruin her teeth, but she thinks she is big enough to catch a 100 lbs sow we have in a pen. hopefully one day she will make a great catch dog.

Dabutcher, you are right. The great dane was specifically bred to run a hog down and catch it.

this is my catch dog. he is full blood bmc. he is 3yrs old. he has never once barked at a hog. just runs in an catches the ear. he has no hesitation in catching any size hog. he has caught everything from a shoat to a 300lb boar w/ good cutters. gotta have a break stick to get him off the ear.

Yes sir Circle C, I have my last years pup out of Rockin P's(Kate) and my dog Nocho that has been baying since he was 5 months. Not now, He is just turned a year old and he hits those big hogs just like a bulldog. He hunts medium and I am trying to get him out of it. All my other dogs if you turn more than two on the ground, you might not even hear a bark!

We have a friend who doesn't own a bulldog, ties everything up, and hunts alone horseback. His old catchdog recently got killed by another dog, but he was a registered catahoula and still his only catch dog until the dog's death at 14. That dog has been in some wrecks in his lifetime that should have killed him, but he never curred out. That was a big brute of a dog, but sweet natured. He caught like a freight train even toothless, and I never once had doubts going in behind him even in old age.
Cheers M

I had a double registered cat that was straight catch.
He couldn't smell his own butt in the woods but that dog could sure catch a hog. Come to think of it I never heard him bark once in the 4 years I owned him.

The boxer is quite a common x here for holding or as you guys say a "catch dog" ,I have one thats a cross between a boxer & a smithfield ,he a very powerfull dog ,that doesn't know of the word ...bark.
