Been workin' too much to make time to hunt, but slid out this morning for a while. Turned Shine and Chub out first, Shine rolled out as if she had x-ray goggles on, and could see the first hog all the way through on the other side of the swamp... ol' Ellie used to get that same glazed over look in her eye when she had figured a track out... neat to see Shine in the same light... She ran hard into a bottom and bayed up as perty as you could ask... until Chub got there and tried the hog, he broke, they bayed a hundred yds later... but this time Chub got a good grip... and paid for it... got the hog handled, and the dog back to the truck, and took a few shots before heading on. Shine truly is a joy to hunt with, just wish she wouldn't help with the catch like she does... just too stressful worrying about her.... Hunted Shine by herself next, Snappa just tends to get her too catchy when they run together.... So we brought Snappa on a lead just in case, and eased into the never-ending swamp on the back side of this property. After a short while Shine jumped a good one in some heavy palmettos and the two rolled out deep. We tracked and tried to stay close but she was way ahead of us and we just couldn't seem to catch back up. As we were going along two hogs got up and gave their position away by the rustling palmetto branches... sent Snapps in and she jumped and also pulled out deep... After a short while I could tell Shine and Snapp had joined up and were heading North fast... not good. Those two are capable and willing to catch any hog I've ever seen.... and I've never seen the two bay any hog when run together.... So, we started jogging to catch up... miles later old Mack called on the cell and said he could hear both dogs bayed hard deeep in the swamp and was going to them(by himself ). We finally made it to our truck about 20 minutes later and hauled but to where Mack was, took another 15 min to get in to them.... still baying hard.... must be a good'n Slowed down when I got close and eased in, heard the hog hit a dog, break, then they bayed again 15yds away... sent A.J. and Jetta, heard the fight and went in to find this bugger... which, if not for Lee, I'm not too sure if I'd ever been able to get flipped.... Big barr for around these parts... this fat sucker ran like a deer, made several miles worth of loops before they got him shut down. Shine's the only one that came out without a scratch, looks like she's all I'm gonna have to hunt with for a while...

Noah, I know how you feel we had one of our best dogs meet us 50 yards from the bay yesterday with 8" of gut hanging out! after three and a half hr surgery he might live We will be hurt without him but some of the things that make him great are some of the things that put him in jeaprody. Good luck with your team and those are some nice hogs.

Yep... about had enough of these head-catchy dogs... just a matter of time before somethin' bad happens. Eventually, I'd like to have nothing but bay dogs, that WILL NOT help with the catch... some day....
Hope yours heals up quick

Glad to see you got a chance to hit the woods after working so much here lately. Looks like your time off from hunting allowed the hogs to grow a little..... Two good toothy hogs, sounds like a good hunt!

That was a really nice barr. I have a good friend that has a female dog that looks just like Shine. She is cream colored with spotted ears, also the mother to my Foot dog. Her name is Lil, I think that she is bmc crossed with catahoula.
