Dont know a dang thing about bird dogs, but have heard that they are pretty gritty and fast, and can hunt all day. got to hunt with a bird x bulldog RCD this weekend and was impressed, just wondering which ones work better, or just what the differences are between them. GSP and english pointer.

I've seen a pile of english crosses... never seen any GSP crosses... may be a reason for it?

Here in Hawaii there are alot of guys running the GSP cross and also a few with english pointers but I have never hunted with a English. I do have a GSP/Lab that was supposed to be for birds but recently my step dad gave up on him and told me to take him so he will be running with my pack soon. My brother in law is running his brother and while he can track a pig he lacks the size to hold one by himself. I believe I posted a pic somewhere on here of my GSP/Lab, I will find it for ya if you need me to!

We have two GSP x with bmc and they have lots of drive. We have a 3/4 bmc, 1/4 catahoula and when he is plum give out, our male GSP x bmc is still going strong. The only thing is that he is one rough dog. His sister isn't as rough (Yet). But I am deffinately a believer in this cross. Wink

Thanks for the input, i have heard that a couple times, that the bird dogs still goin strong after other dogs give out. but is it, conformation, are they just built better, or is it just pure drive, desire?

I forgot to meantion that they mature later then alot of other breeds or at least that is what I have found. They are like a hyper child that has raided the candy jar! lol

They are a huntin machine. The EP/pit crosses tend to range further than the GSP/pit crosses. They do usually wind, have awesome endurance and want to hunt all day. Here in Georgia the EP/Pit cross is VERY popular. If your interested, I know a man who raises a dang good line of bird/bull dogs. Send me a PM and I give you his name and number. I bought two myself.

Tnhillbilly, I think that it is a strong prey drive because I can't see any better conformation in them. They become very intent on getting a hog.

BigAinaBuilt, the late maturing that you are seeing may be coming from the lab side because we got our gsp x bmc's when they were around 3 or 4 months and had them hunting at 6 months. Of course that may be the bmc side. I can clearly see that our bmc's mature much faster than our catahoula's. Good Lord!!!! A catahoula before it turns two is like a rat on acid!!!!!!! LOL Or at least the line that we have is.

Me and my dad just got English Pointers. MrMud can I train them for birds and hogs or is one or the other? The EP's fell in my lap so I took them thinking I would have to wait for a hog dog. I can build a bay pen or whatever to teach them what a pig is.

Is there a certain strain of either GSP or EP that are better suited for hogs? i have been wanting to cross some bird dog into some of my dogs, tried it once EP x redtick hound, i didnt like them, they were not gritty/gamey at all. maybe i should have give them a little more time, but if they dont show intrest at 10 months old i wont keep them.

Seems like there are dogs in every litter that just wont hunt. Undecided  Tnhillbilly, was the redtick that you bred an outstanding hog dog? And the EP a hunting dog as well?  I do believe that prey drive has been bred out of many dogs, so it is important to breed two outstanding hunting dogs to increase the chances that the offspring will inherit the parents prey drive. But it is still pretty much a crap shoot.

I breed a half blackmouth half plott gype to a full blooded german shorthair  sure enough bird dog one time, and ended up raising a sold black gyp out of that breeding that was a hog dog.  I ended up selling her for 2K and kicked myself ever since. Mike that was that Sally dog that was the momma, that was at the BDO years ago. I think I could have bred her to just about anything and got some good dogs. I retired her and she started hanging out up at my mothers house, and momma took her and had her fixed.LOL

I hunted behind a couple bird dogs a week ago, they were young and didn't do much, but they sure do hustle in the woods.
I wouldn't mind trying a straight or mix out.
