something that im sure has been discussed before, but since there is so many people on here i was curious about stories and pictures of good strays that ended up in a good hunting home and became a solid member of your packs. I usually wouldn't pick up a stray but I do have one that had wandered up to my vets office that I have had for awile and is a solid pack dog.

The pit that i posted last week as my cross eyed pit, was a stray. He wandered up to our house one day with a bullet hole in his back leg. We were just putting our pack together and did not have a catch dog yet. We doctored his wound and asked around to see if maybe he belonged to someone, which was unlikely because we live out in the boonies and people are always dumping dogs out here. Still we left him running loose thinking that maybe he would just go home. A couple of days later I got a call from a neighbor saying that he was at their house killing cats so I went and got him and put him on a chain. About a month later we tried him on a hog and he worked great. We have had him ever since. He is a great catch dog whose days were numbered before we got him.

My best strike dog (ever) was going to the pound to be gassed when I took him home. My best running catch dog was going to be shot and I took him.
I will get pics today.
The best bird finding bird dog I eve owned was a stray that came up to work. One time I counted up the bird dogs I have owned and quit after I reached 200.

Me and a buddy of mine picked up a half starved pup from the side of the road. Took him directly to my hog pen and threw him in w/ about a 250# boar. Pup wanted to eat him, may have been because he was hungry but anyways. Pup grew up and turned into a pretty decent dog. Kind of a german shppard looking dog. My buddy ended up selling him to a fellow we know. Old fellow tells everyone that he is a german sheppar and hound cross. LOL I have contenplated buying him back from the old fellow but havent.

Every once in a while I'll get bored and get on the local shelters website just to see who's in jail. About a year or so ago, I came across this dog and liked the way she looked (anyone who knows me will know why) so for $25, I paid ransom and got her out. Gave her to a hunting partner of mine who was just starting to put together a small pack and in a short while she's made a pretty respectful dog. Found a few hogs and is starting to put things together. Her name is "PD" which stands for pound dog. Here's her mugshot that was on the website.

This one (Gus - brown and tan) showed up at my house as a pup. He is a excellent help dog that will find his own hog sometimes. I wish I knew what he was.

good lookin dogs, here is my mutt, im sure most of you have seen pics of him before, he has basically turned into my #1 dog while the pups are still turning on and figuring it out, he is really a help dog but has been known to step up and make it happen himself.

You guys and gals should be commended for allowing these strays to have a job and a second shot at life. There are so many unwanted dogs out there and no telling what talented dogs get the needle every day. I'm glad to see this post, it has made me smile.
Three cheers M
