Joe struck this boar in some pine woods and we had a race for about 600 yards before they bayed him allong a creek in a Lemon thicket. When I got to the bay I noticed Joe was backed up baying farther than normal. I shot the hog and found out why. Joe was cut in a bad spot on the leg........Severed his Ichilies tendon. The gyps rolled out but came back in just as I made it to the truck with Joe. We called it a day and headed to the Docs. The vet said surgery came with a success rate of less than 10% and that was optomistic. Obviously not lifethreating, but most likely he will be crippled the rest of his life. He put the stop on this hog, but payed the price. He was starting to impress me more and more each time and he outstruck my 7 year old gyp on this boar. I knew in the back of my mind that it was just a matter of time before he met the wrong hog. Waylon

Real good boar Waylon, sorry to hear about Joe. Are you gonna keep hunting him after he heals up, I have seen some pretty fast three legged dogs.

Good boar. One leg doesn't stop a dog from hunting.

Good boar. One leg doesn't stop a dog from hunting. Same thing happened to my buddies dog and he got the leg amputated and he is still a dang good dog. He'll go over a mile on a hog. We call him tripod haha

Good boar. One leg doesn't stop a dog from hunting. Same thing happened to my buddies dog and he got the leg amputated and he is still a dang good dog. He'll go over a mile on a hog. We call him tripod haha I am looking at that as an option. However, I hate to not try and fix it. Right Now I am looking into taking him to the vet in Coldspring. They quoted me a price that I am willing to loose in the gamble if the surgery does not work which there is a pretty high chance of......and showed the most confidence that they could fix it. Matt....If i can get the leg fixed so that it will have atleast some sence of functionality then I will hunt him again in the future. If it does'nt end up getting fixed I am going to see if the leg causes any problems and if it does then might have to get it amputated from the femur down. In that case, and as hard a dog as he is, I just dont know if he will be able to get out of the way fast enough on another bad hog, so I don't know if it will be practical to hunt him anymore. He might have to live the rest of his life as a farm dog or someone might be able to use him as a cow dog on gentle cattle. He is allready adjusting to moving with three legs he can get around the yard ok. Waylon

Sorry to hear about it Waylon! And those wild lemon thickets are ridicoulously nasty, that's one of the worse places you can ever catch a hog

Had a young pup get her achilles tendon cut in half. My vet sewed it together and she's as good as new now. Problem was healing it without her messing with it. If it got into the nerve it's a different story.
Nice boar.

Waylon, I think it would be well worth it to haul him to Coldspring. Doc Merry has put many hog dogs back together through the years... I hope it works out.
