Alternative breeds used for Hog Hunting

I was reading an online hunting magazine when I came across an advertisement for hog removal, went to the website- I though it would be interesting to share since the most recent discussion on genetics and such. I got a kick out of it since we got some discussing Corgis,Boxer, Dobermans and such.

I saw a guy at Uncle Earls this year parked down close to the entrance that had 6 or 8 black labs pups on a chain for sale.  He claimed he had been breeding these for a while, and they were heck on hogs.

I couldn't help but notice when we pulled by as we were leaving Sunday afternoon that his chain was still pretty well stocked..

I was baying a hog once in my pasture with some pups and the nighbors golden lad followed us out ther and i figured what the heck, well as the pups bayed in a pond i started calling out and i got every dog out except the lab, she stayed bayed well into the night as i fell asleep and it was her first time to see a hog, if she wasnt so old i would have kept her and added to the pack.

Yeah i been to that site b4.  i said the same thing..... labs?  But i bet they work great.  works for those guys.  they seem to be "Stopping Hogs"

I know of quite a few guys using labs in S Florida, and they all do pretty well....known for being pretty rough.  I just don't like the "fat lap dog look"

Crossing him(110# Cane Corso) with my #1 strike dog(50# cur).  He's 8yo now and still can outrun a deer   This female I've got is like watching a bobcat move, not to mention she's been catching hogs from 6 mnth to present... getting better every day

my main strike dog is most lab in her. i like hunting with them. she is a really gritty dog too. we keep her in the house most of the time. she is an extremely smart dog. ellis you knew i wouldnt miss out on this post lol.

I've got a male and female pup that's 3/4 pit 1/4 lab. Around 4mo old. I'm keeping the male and someone can have the female. She's solid black with a small wihte patch on her chest. Gonna be built like a pit with some legs.

remember ole Duke papers 2 feet long would find his own hog and rough been cut up thats why we got him out of hog business didnt want to get him killed.still prefer ybmc but own other breeds too.

I have a 4 yr old chocolate lab that will catch and hold a hog pretty darn good.  Twice she has single handedly found and caught a hog in the marsh while we were putting out decoys before a duck hunt.  Thank goodness they were both squealers or I would have never known.

One time on the way back from a duck hunt I got a call from some buddies that were working some pups in a pen and told me to stop by.  My lab was going nuts running around the pen trying to get in.  I let her in and she instantly ran right past the pups and locked up tight.

Speaking of labs.

  About 7 years ago I was dropping off some young catahoulas to  Tommy Strange down in Alvin. We put the young dogs in his baypen, and I happened to have my pet lab with me at the time.  My lab was baying from the outside of the pen while the young dogs were inside trying to figure out what they where supposed to be doing. My lab ended up catching the hog through the panels.  Maybe she was trying to defend me? maybe she liked to bay hogs?  I guess I will never know. I never tried her around another hog after that.

Now in the last week, I have had a visitor to my barn that runs half lab - half catahoula around the Lake Charles area, and another friend in South Texas that is hunting what he calls Labrahoulas.  I have never hunted around one, but apparently they work for some.

Here's a photo of one of my fluffy stock dogs working a sow with a cat gyp. Granted, the cat gyp is more "in your face", and the Aussie dog was a looser bay. Aussie dog wants to get to the head, and hold the attention there. The only bad thing about using a dog like this is her propensity to bring the pig to you. If it runs, she is trying to turn it around and bring it back to you. She got catchy a little while back and got in trouble for it. This put a kink in her baying at the hog for a bit. She's back to baying again, and both she and the hog are as happy as larks.


All that fluff just looks out of place with a hog in the picture :O)

The other day I was working two catahoula pups in the baypen and our little miniature pincher
came off the porch when she heard the other dogs barking and squeezed through a hole in the baypen and went right to baying with the catahoula dogs like she had been doing it all her life.
I told my buddy I was gonna take her to Uncle Earls this year lol

Our family border collie will find'em, bay'em, and catch the little ones. He was my first hog dog "by accident." He doesn't bark enough though. More of a herding style of bay I guess might call it. Anyway, he doesn't get to go much anymore. The rest of the familys too scared of what might happen to him. He mostly runs traps with me now and caught one that was making an escape while loading from trap to trailer last summer. He loves a hog and is smart as a whip.

yeah i got a part border collie, i started him as a joke in a bay pen and he did really well, havent tried him in the woods yet though

went to a bayin a couple weeks ago and a guy entered a boston terrier in the old and young bay,,, talk about a bayin fool,, that dog was hammered up
