Cause not everyone get to hunt in hog infested country, some places hogs are few and far between.
I'm fortunate enough to have both kinds of places... it makes you appreciate a dog that will go out and find one. There may not be a hog one on the place, but it makes you feel better knowing that your dogs covered it.

i agree with W-tate, some days the dogs find hogs 200 yds away and some days the find hogs a mile away. Just depends on where the hogs are and where we are hunting. I know that if there is a hog a mile away, i dont want my dogs to turn around and come back after running 500yrds out.

I like a dog that will get out from under my feet and cover some ground. All my strike dogs hunt about 600 - 800 yards on average. To me, that's long range. When they get in some rank sign, I've had em go 2 miles before they bay. We catch a lot of hogs cause we cover alot of ground. Plus, we have a handle on all the dogs. We cast and cover ground and load up. Move down and cast again. A lot of people around here spend more time screaming at dogs then they do hunting. I can dump 4 times to their one. Some places a dog has got to hunt to find a pig.

For some reason it seems like a good deal of your 40 posts on this forum are knocking or discounting the fact that some people own deep hunting dogs. Honestly, for me personally it not about the distance my dogs travel, but about the fact that whether it's walking, roading or whatever I shouldn't have to lead them there. Believe it or not, a dog that ranges out and actually leaves out hunting doesn't necessarily pass up hogs to do so. What that dog does is KEEP going when there are no hogs near. It's called hunting drive...something I believe most people conveniently overlook (or simply don't understand).

Probably because some dogs are so intent on finding the hog that they are tracking. A smart boar when being tracked by dogs will run right through the middle of a group of sows and choats to loose the dogs, but some dogs don't fall for that, they will stay right on the track of that ol boar.

Some guys like drinking beers and driving cross country to a bay and other like running and trying to drink a beer! To each his own as long as it is a good safe time! I wouldn't feed a open long range dog but I would love to tag along on a hunt with someone who does as long as at the end of the day we're reminicing (sp) about the day as the hogs on the fire and the drink are on ice!

Why do you need to understand? What's wrong with just being happy that your dogs are finding hogs. Everyone has there own style of dogs and way of doing things. I'd rather Spend more time hunting and less time trying to convince people that my way is better. Just my $.02

Good point mike... Plus hogbuyer i think its safe to say that no one wants a dog that will pass up hogs to find one a mile away. My long range dog that will find a hog if there is only one sow in 2 mi.'s is a short range dog if there are hogs 20 yards in front of us in the corn! But hot nosed short ranged dogs will not be able to find the hogs that my dog will. Versatility is King in my opinion and hunting terrain.

One thing to consider that my hunting friend muleman taught me....that most old hound men know, that i didn't. There are dogs that once they get on a track will stay with it to the bitter end and tree 5 - 10 mi away. There are other hounds that will start the same track but if they run across a hotter track will take that one and tree alot closer to you some time. I perfer the latter as long as the bottom end is there in both but to each his own and my best dog is one that will stay on the same track so i obviously have some work to do. Kind of like a dog that follows every zig zag the hog traveled vs one that runs a generally straight line picking up parts of the track and coverin the same track quicker...I wish i could breed dogs for a living

I think that some people confuse a dogs ability to find a hog with range. Finding a hog has to do with the dogs nose. Range is how far the dog is willing to travel to pick up a track. JMO
