I took a couple new Catahoula dogs out to see what they would do. One was on the pigs each time. The other we thought was around on the first pig. But on the second pig he did not even leave the mule. I told my wife about the hunt and she asked how many guys and how many dogs? When I told her she said "and only one of you had any sense."

But the real question is about dogs. I got this dog that is supposed to be a Catahoula just no papers to prove it about a year old. He is still very stand offish. He now tolerates me petting him. He was supposed to be almost finished. Has anybody had a dog that didn't want to hunt when you got it but came alive later? I was told if a Catahoula doesn't like you he will not hunt for you until he likes you. I don't want to push him too hard but don't want to give up on him either. He is a good looking dog.

most dogs especially hunting dogs take a little while to warm up to you and other dogs in the pack, i wouldnt worry about that.

one thing though, i wouldnt call a 1 year old dog finished...  Shocked

"Looks" wont find a hog. Wink

An almost finished 1 year old dog? Heck mine are usually almost started at that age! Shocked

I dont know the breeding on the dog or where it came from but the limited experience that I have with taking on an older dog tells me he is going to need plenty of time. The day you walk up and he doesnt head to the dog house and actually seems happy to see you is the day you can probably start having a good look at him in the woods.

Good luck and keep us posted!

There is some definate truth in that a dog has to like you and most important trust you to hunt for you.

If he won't hunt my wife wants him. She says he is a nice dog. I say if he don't hunt within six months she can have him. But for about the next six months I plan to take him out on each hunt. I am about to try to start some puppies in a pen and see if he steps up. But the other Catahoula and my BMC are all about the same age and they are showing a desire to hunt. I hope he starts hunting but I am with BoarNinja looks don't catch anything I want. I will take the ugliest dog that catches hogs over a good looking dog that won't hunt.
