Me and my oldest son, who turns 19 tomorrow Shocked, Bryant(UNDERDOG) and his son, along with Chris and Mandi headed out to Waller County this morning. We ended up catching 7 total for the day. Caught two sows real quick, then Mandi's greyhound got to get her work out by catching 4 shoats around 20 lbs each that were scattering all over the pastures. Loaded the dogs and headed to the north end of the ranch. Chris got the mule stuck in the creek crossing and had to pulled out by a ranger. Grin We turned the dogs loose and while we were getting the winch cables back in, they bayed about 450 yards out. Got over there and sent the bulldogs in. The two boys ran in to leg the hog, but quickly ran back out when they saw the teeth. Shocked Ended up with a worn out old boar with a broken jaw... had a perfect set of cutters that were just shy of 3 inches. It was right after noon and warming up, so that was a good hog to end the day on.

Nice boar.  I sure would like to know the story behind the broken jaw.

We were speculating as to what broke the jaw ourselves. As close as he was to the highway, perhaps he got hit by a car, or maybe got kicked by livestock in one of the nearby pastures. There are two horses in a pasture pretty close to where we got him. I know my horses get mad and kick my hogs all the time when the hogs pester them for more food. Luckily mine tend to get kicked in the bodies and not the head, but I could see where a good kick could bust that jaw.

Whatever caused the injury, the poor hog was in bad shape. You can see how poor he was from the pictures (although he had plenty of fight in him still). He had horrible breath that you could smell a little way away from him because of all the issues in his mouth. He needed to be put down, otherwise he would likely be living in someone's pen.

Fun hunt though, that's for sure.

Cheers
