This ought to be a interesting one... Tongue

"Pretty is as pretty does".... that's what I've always been told anyways Wink  And, yes it's true.  Looks don't mean much, but for me.... I want both.   I might hunt an ugly dog(well, maybe not)....but I'm sure not gonna breed more ugly dogs.

Form follows function.  Breed the "correct" physical specimens that hunt, then breed the get that have the best of both.  To each his own, and plenty of my friends will disagree, but it's just not as enjoyable to me to hunt with an ugly sob... no matter how many hogs he catches for me.

As a breeder I have to say we strive for both appearance and ability.
I have found though that this phrase applies heavily in the hunting dog world
"Beauty is in the eye of the beholder"

Yuki is one of my daughters dogs and to most he is not much to look at but Kass & I both think he is pretty in his own way. Or maybe it's just in our way.

I have to agree with you though, I wouldn't breed an unattractive dog. By that I mean that if the dog did not meet standards for it's breed or if it was just disproportioned to a point of ugliness.

BUT I also would not breed a good looking dog that couldn't hunt well either....

I care more about what the dogs made of than anything else. Yes, I like a good lookin' dog...but it's definitely not high on my list of 'druthers  Wink

I agree with Blue 100% about not breeding a ugly dog.
But  I don't care how ugly a dog is, if it consistently finds hogs then I got a home for it.

Looks are just icing on the cake, but who doesn't enjoy looking at nice dogs.  When someone posts an ad for a dog, whats the first thing people ask for...a picture.  Does that tell you anything about the dogs abilities?

I also know personally of people who hunt a particular breed over another simply because they like the way they look.  Myself personally, I'm a sucker for yellow brindle dogs but I'm sure not going to discount anything else just because of appearance.

I dont care for looks HOWEVER sometimes i have more confidence in a dog that looks like they can hunt and get it done over the one that doesnt although that is not the case sometimes... And it is nice to have good looking dogs when hauling them around and rancher and farmers know certain breeds and looks and it can engage in conversations sometimes. However i personally like them plott X dogs.

Great picture, still amazes me how many dogs it takes to catch a hog over there though Wink   Either the hogs are that bad or the dogs need to be a little "prettier" lol

My grandfather used to say life is too short to hunt with an ugly dog and the more I think about it the more I agree with him.  Give me a litter that comes from a jam up line of proven hunting dogs and I'll take the best looking one out of the group.

I could care less what a dog looks like.  I am after FUNCTION.  Form follws function but you start to head down hill when you put looks first.

Got no problems breeding ugly dogs as long as they have the tools I am looking for and know how to use em.

It wouldn't matter to me if they were bald, had one large eye in the middle of their head, and a forked tail....If they can find hogs on a consistent basis then I'd be happy as could be...... Grin
