I have a little APBT that is just over a year and hits like a freight train even though she is only 40lbs, she is a Colby dog so she won't get much bigger is any at all. The other night I took her to the pen and let her go on 2 big hogs and she both of them like train, grabbed the leg on both. The second hog was a real mean one that still had cutters (took them out after she caught him) she was in a bay vest and cut collar her vest has not come in yet and the bay vest in the only one that fit her small self. Anyway she got thrown like 15' in the air by that hog and rolled and thrown some more but she never quit. She kept at it and kept trying for the front leg and that is why she kept getting thrown around. Finally she got the nose and locked it down. We rolled it and took his teeth. I put her in again on a smaller pig and straight to the leg again took her off and made her take the ear. took her off and made her take the ear again. She held the ear and would not let go but my question is is this the right way to teach her to go for the ear? 1st catch dog so I am learning. Thanks all.

Lotta pits will go for the leg because of their fighting background. There is a good chance with time she will figure out it is easier to hang onto the ear. Keep huntin her and hopefully with time she will figure it out.

Send her to the bay as a second catchdog. That way you can position her where you want her to catch with the hog under control. It may take a few times before she gets the hang of it.

Yes that trait is very strong in her!!! She is truly game breed 100%. Fearless of almost anything with the exception of plastic bags and ironing boards....go figure

You might try legging a rank hog, feeding her the ear, then letting go of the hog and her so she has to hang on for dear life...then she knows she can handle the hog in this position...this worked for my buddy bob's cd. He repeated that a few times then his pit just went for the ear after that.
