Went out this morning with BigO and skoalbandit and family and got on a very very clever hog. The hog we got on was a good sized boar and the darn thing smoked us. I know we had him stopped a few times but not long enough to get to him, the darn thing would run the dogs through other groups of pigs to throw the dogs off him. We were heading to the main dogs that were bayed and when we got close enough to hear the bay pretty good we dumped the pups out. The pups headed to the bay but my lil gyp headed the opposite way back tracking, we drove a lil ways and we heard her open up. She ran the original hog we got on right past the truck and he was a big ole sucker. We proceeded to the bay the main dogs were on and they had a shoat caught and strung out in a creek. We gatherd all the dogs up and started to head for my gyp that was still with the big boar, or so we thought. Got to where she was bayed and let the others out to help her cause she sure needed help. That damn ole boar did it again, run my gyp through another group of pigs and threw her off his trail and on a smaller pig. All in all it was a good day of hunting but damn that hog is clever.  Lets hear some other stories about the things hogs have done to save their butts.

That happens to me from time to time.  On those kinds of hogs I like to try and find them when they are away from other hogs and put a hard dog on him that will either get him stopped close or get cut down trying.  Hope you get that hog.

I've also had them run through cattle except the cows just slows the dogs down does'nt work as good as running through another bunch of hogs.  Also a couple times had them run over the top of skunks dont know if it was on purpose for cover scent but it sure worked.

That was a very interesting story. Those things are a lot smarter than a lot of people think.

I agree with putting a rough dog on hogs like this but how in the world do you know when the "clever" ones are away from other hogs??

Read the sign.... you never know for sure but its a good sign to find what might be his tracks in an area alone.  Allot of times if you check the Current food source and only find certain tracks thats a good indication of whats around or not around if you are confident thats the prefered sourse you can assume most hogs would come there if they were around.  I don't like to leave all the tracking up to the dogs I spend a good amount of time studying hog sign.

buckhunter1983,
Clearly that hog you ran yesterday is a Russian .  Grin  angel

Now this is a good thread!
The intelligence of a hog has always impressed me and I have ran across a few smart ones myself.
In the SHNF I had a big red bar hog give me the slip a many a time. Never caught that sucker either.
We bayed him many times but I witnessed this particular bar on 3 different occasions, nose a smaller hog to the dogs and then slip out the back door, disappearing for the day. Yep! He would serve another hog right up to the dogs and It worked for him every time I witnessed it.

I chased him the last time he did it because he had a dog hot on him when he left. Followed them about a 1/4 mile and lost them on the bank of Lake Conroe. I was about to give it up when I noticed my horse being very interested in the lake. It took me a wile because they were so far out but, there was that bar hog and my ole red dog swimming Lake Conroe!! They were way the heck out there and I am surprised that my dog even heard me when I called him back! I couldnt believe what a big expanse of water that bar was willing to swim to get away from the dogs! I only seen him do it the once but Im sure he had done it plenty of times before.

oh yeah.
We have the same thing going on latley. It has happened to us at least five times in the last month. Same hog.
We have even seen the boar out on the opening with the cows, turn a few dogs loose to hiim and he will run and find a group of sows bedded-nursing and the dogs will get on the sows. I am about to catch up to him with some lead...lol

LOL! buckhunter, dont worry about me going there again! I was just carrying on a joke that Waylon started on another thread for a laugh. Dont blame you for being a little defensive! lol

I like this thread because I am very interested in how clever hogs can be in giving a hunter and his dogs the slip! I will be leaving it to that subject you have my word!

Not getting defensive, alot of people think they know what a true russian is and I for one am no expert but grew up hunting them on the coast in california and can say that Ive yet to see one here that resembles the ones out there. I get the joke yall are caring on but dang some folks just take it too far. Dont get me wrong I love reading the bickering back and forth it makes my days go by fast.

Buckhunter, remember the big pen we drove through with the cattle guards, inside that place? Guess what was in there for two or three years, before they opened the gate.

Hey Ben, I ment to ask you guys the other day when you guys got over where Bob and I were but I forgot it when the pups bayed.. Did you see a freeze brand on that hog that went by you guys?

The ranch manager trapped 345  hogs in that 1500 high fence part the past few months trying to controll them. That is the part of the ranch we ended up in after the hog proved they were dead wrong about having all the holes fixed..
We been hearing the fence was fixed every year for ever and ever. Every time we hunt a place that joins it, the hog, dogs and us wind up in there..  Cheesy  Sure bayed up some nice trophy hogs in and around that place the last 12 years or so.
Those " New york "  hogs had freeze brands on them back then. Those would be old,  but we bayed up one of them last year so he or another one might still be around .. The bulldogs missed that day, got whacked up, rolled and the brushbusters ended up huntin a tree, so that hog won that round..  Grin
