I am trying to figure out the best way to provide some shade for my dogs since its starting to warm up. I have had to move them around, and there are no trees or anything where they are now. I use the plastic barrels and tie out stacks about 10-15 feet apart along the fence. Does anyone have pics or ideas of something i can build to provide alittle shade?

I use the barrels also and what i do is i take tin and wrap the barrel with about a 2 foot overhang. It provides a lot of shade for your dogs.

Build you a rack/platform for the barrels, up off the ground (18 to 20 inches) so they can get under it in the shade.
That way they have a good shelter from sun underneath but can still jump up and climb in the barrel if rain or cold.

Thanks for the ideas. I thought of cutting some of the barrels in half and bolting them on top the way you did the tin. But im kind of wanting something to go over their water bucket too so it will stay alittle cooler and keep from getting pollen and leaves and any other crap out of it.

I have seen people take a 4x8 sheet of ply wood and attach one end to the top of the barrel and let the 8' length  go out away from the barrel and the other ' end set on the ground providing shade for the dog and the water they drink (which is key) and from the wind and rain.  The thing to remember is trying to prevent any kind of tangle hazard that may get the dog hung up where he can't get to that shade and water.  In high temps that is certain death..

That has been my biggest problem with the ideas i have had. Going out from the side, it would have to have something to support it. But having the support or leg, the dog could wrap the chain around it and either get tangled or pull it down.
Having the whole sheet on the ground would eliminate that problem, and the way they are set up on the fence, they wouldnt be able to get behind it and get tangled. Then, the only problem i would have is that i have their water buckets wired to the fence to keep them from knocking them over, so that would be harder to fill them since i dont have a water hose that runs that far.  Undecided

If you have all your dogs staked out you can go to an army navy store and get one of there big camo nets.  It will provide shade because of the camo leaf material on it.  The best though is the mesh material that landscapers use to wrap around their trees when they hall them.  That stuff puts out alot of shade and you can get it in big sections.  Just set some posts and string it up. Good luck.

I use a wire spool laying on crossties to get a north wind, they will dig under it. put it where they cant go out the other side. screw an eyebolt to the top to hang water bucket from. I cut out two boards so they can get in out of the rain.

using 2x4's and plywood make a 2x2x3 cube dog house, cut a hole just big enough to get in and out of, elevate it about 5 inches off the ground. use a 4x8 sheet of plywood for the roof. the plywood should hang over the doghouse a few inches to keep rain out. use 2x4s to support the rest of the plywood. use horse panel or small square panel (if the dog can get his head through the panel he can get his collar stuck and will be dead this summer) make the roof have 3 sides so the dog cant get wraped around the post. when making the support posts for the roof put them a couple inches away from the edge. this is what you will nail the panel to. if the panel is hanging out a chain will get hung on it.
this design is good all year long. keeps rain out, blocks wind in the dog house, provides shade for the dog and water, and keeps the shavings in the dog house if you cut the hole right
