I think this is the correct place to post. My sister has left me her fox terrier and i want to know what kind of animals do people use these dogs to hunt? I was thinking on teaching him to hunt rabbits or squirrel but i have no idea on how to do so. He is young so i want to try him out on something since my dad does not let me teach any of our curs to do so lol he thinks it will ruin them lol Any suggestions and insight are appreciated.

Depends on the dog. If he's gamey there is no reason you can't use him to flush rabbits to gun and hunt other varmints. Why not try the little bugger on hogs? The show crowd and pet breeders have generally bred foxterriers to be too big to hunt fox or any other ground critters anymore.

Hes pretty small I dont know how much more he will grow. I stuck him in a little pen we have with about 6 piglets that are smaller than him and he would just look at them and then look at me, I tried to get him to chase them or bark at them but finally gave up. Then later on while I was in the house I heard him barking and looked out and saw him barking at them and while feeding the bigger hogs later on he barked at a sow we have thats about to have a litter so maybe little by little I can get him to hate hogs. Really I want to use him on rabbits, he strays off on his own in the woods and ill tell him to "go on" and he understands that I want him to leave from my side and go looking for something. I see some potential in him.

Put your hands around his chest. If you can't wrap them entirely around and touch fingertips tehn he is probably too big for earthwork. But you can certainly use him on rabbits. Just get him out there and get him comfortable using his sniffer. Maybe find some fresh roadkill and do some drags. Get him used to gunfire and then you are good to go. He'll either have it in him or he won't.

They will work on anything that moves, lots buy a squirrel trap and work them on a live trapped squirrel by sicking him on it while the squirrel is inside and being rasied up and down a tree limb, it usually does not take much to get them to treeing. It is really a fox terrier or a rat terrier or what breed. got a picture?? Start out with basic obey me stuff and them get the squirrel tail on a fishing pole deal going and make or buy a raccoon rolling cage to work small pigs, coon squirrels feral cats in etc etc. What county do you live in and do you have any huntable population of squirrels?? Squirrel dogs bring more money than hog dogs if you have a good one that will bark tons and tree. You can also train him to find dead hogs and wounded deer as well for $$$$$ during hunting season unless you are in one of those prohibited countys in texas, good luck and keep us posted how he is doing. There is a lot of dvds and videos in Full Cry Magazine and some on Squirrel dog centrals websites too.

Sorry Im a little late on replying but I wanted to find out if he was a fox terrier or a rat terrier first. I found out that he might be a rat terrier and not a fox terrier, but my sister has his papers and she's got to find them to be for sure. I will post a pic of him so maybe you can tell me what he is lol. Well I dont think I will have a problem getting him to hunt cause he loves chasing rabbits. Everytime I go and feed the pigs he goes over to the vacant property next to us where all the rabbits moved over to because there is high brush, and I hear him barking and running around crazy. I know the owner of the property but the next time he comes by im going to ask permission for me to go over so I can train him. He will stay out there for a while to. I live in Montgomery county. I put out a trap to catch a raccoon but no luck. At least I know that he likes chasing stuff so maybe if I can trap something I can get him to work on it. Thanks for yalls replies!!!

Rat terrier. Seems gamey enough just get him out and he'll do the rest on his own. You can start conditioning him to gunfire.

Yeah hes gotten very gamey now. He bays everything and spends the whole day chasing rabbits and treeing squirrels. I have been really busy lately and havent been able to work with him but as soon as I get the chance I will and I know he will work on whatever I try him on.
